What's your best story of catching a nice shark where your clearly out gunned?
Mine is a ~60lb blacktip on 200yds of 12lb mono while snook fishing.
He worked me for half an hour up and down the beach but i got em in 
I'm sure some monsters have been caught on smaller reels, lets hear it!

I was at the beach one night low on shark bait so I rigged up a cut piece of needlefish on a shimano sedona 4000 and casted it out right in front of the sandbar hoping for maybe a ray or even a catfish. 20 minutes later the reel started screaming. I looked over at my rod and the holder was almost pulled over. I ran over and thought to myself this isn't a catfish (what you mainly catch off the beach at night while surf fishing in my area). I took my rod out of the holder and tightened the drag, a 6' plus tarpon blasted out of the water, I saw it shining in the moonlight. It jumped 4 or 5 more times and soon I was about 200 yards down from where my shark rods were set up, standing in chest deep water with an empty spool and burnt out spinning reel. I ended up forgetting that setup at the beach that night but it didn't matter, that tarpon totally trashed the reel and the inserts popped out of the guides during the fight.
I have quite a few of those kind of stories...
but as far as other stories I know. you should ask aaron about the 32lb cuda on the ambassador and ugly stick under the bridge... and hammer about the huge permit on the ultra light going through all the pilings... not to mention an 11ft hammer on a jigmaster with 30lb mono 
.
For me it was a tarpon over 6ft I fought for 2 hours around the pier on a jigmaster and noodle rod. It dumped the reel twice and never really got airborne. Beached it with a ton of people in the water... so many that I couldn't even walk it in to shore for a pic with my friend's camera. I luckily managed to receive pics from an old man who turned some in from his disposable to the bait house a week later.
Just an average fisherman.
Lats year I went out armed with my 9/0 and 4/0, when I got to the beach my 9/0 was having drag problems so I had to use the 4/0 rigged with a chunk of ray wing. All of a sudden it got BLASTED, almost spooled on the first two initial runs. Then about 40 minutes in my reel just started falling apart. The rod brace came apart and shot all over the beach. Then the worst case scenario my reel handle stated to wobble and then BAM reel handle came completely off. Quickly my buddy grabs a zip tie and runs it through the hole where the handle was and then I had to reel this thing in with a zip tie as a handle while it ripped my had and fingers to shreds. Then land this 9.7 lemon!!!! 4/0 with 40/lbs class line with 100 yards of braid backing.

Ive never got anything huge but one day I was fishing down at the gulfport pier wasnt shark fishing just looking for jacks and trout. so i had a shrimp on 10 lbs test. ended up cathcn a 3 and half ft bonnethead with no leader just the hook.
