Hey, I started shark fishing last summer. I caught one about 5 ft and got broke off by a nice one. I have a Penn 850 and a 114. I would like to know what type line and size to rig them with! I used 80 pd braid last summer and 200 pd mono for the leader! How long for the leader and what size hooks? Straight or circle?
thanks for any info!!!!

I fish with a 114H and load it with 50 pound mono. I don't like braid, but lots of people have great success with it. I did have the pleasure of fishing from a boat however, so if need be we'd just chase the shark down. The 114H is great for really nice for getting a good fight out of a medium size shark. That being said, you don't want to overkill your hook/leader size. I use piano wire with an 11/0 circle hook most. Hope this helps for starters!

i have a 114 but never fish it. i have it spooled with 65lb braid with 50lb mono topshot. as for leaders i use 20ft of 400lb mono to 400lb swivel then another 10 feet of 480 wire then one or 2 12/0 j hooks.

Theres some pretty good info in this forum on the basics from the beach look
in the how to catch monsters section and go down the list of topics. You'll pick
up a lot from there but you need to find an experinced shark fisherman to show
you some pointers where are you located?

a 6/0 is a very versatile reel, if your going for small 4-7ft sharks 50lb or 60lb mono all the way is great, but if you wanan land a bigger shark, like an 8ft hammer, you might wana invest in some braid backing. about the riggings, if you enjoy settign hook as much as I do, Go withe the J's if not circles are for you, you do need some wire or cable, once again its your preference, i do not suggest straight mono for sharks because when they swallow the bait they swallow teh first couple of inches of ur line too and bite you off, i use roughly 5-10ft of #12 or #15 wire, anywhere from 6/0 to 14/0 j hook, and a good swivel, i dont use super long riggings because I may be in a situation where i need to cast my baits out from a beach or bridge or pier ad a 30ft rigging will not allow for casting.

learn from people on here, combine the styles you like and be original and maybe one day it will pay off, maybe wit ha hard lesson learned, or with a big shark landed

Just an average fisherman.
