that is a very loaded question with no real correct answer. pros and cons to both star and leverdrags, however to me the only cons to the leverdrags is cost of parts compared to a star drag reel. But then again In about 3 years i havent had to buy a single part for any of my 4 everols (4/0, 6/0wide, 9/0, 12/0). I personally feel leverdrags are better suited to land much larger fish than on an equivalent sized senator, due to superior drag pressure exerted smoothly. But i for one dont like leverdrags that u preset the drag for strike as i like the ability to utilize the full drag capability of the reel at all times.

i myself have senators and then for surf fishing have a finnor offshore spinning reel i love the ability to put 60 lbs of drag on a fish if needed but cost for the senators to fix is pocket change as i do all service myself. the santiago is huge and packs as much drag as a avet trx but ive never fished them

I got a finnor 9500 and its functioned really well over the past 3 years I've used it. The anti-reverse corroded up after 6 months but that just required a little steel wool. The only problem I have with finnor is that they are owned by Zebco. I don't think that the Santiago's are as good as they look. Avet would be a better choice in my book. Get something built in the USA or Europe.

one of the best deals out there is the Avet 80w. The prices were reduced many places this spring to $649, thats a lot of reel for the money, and a much better shark reel then the TRX in my opinion. You get all the drag you will need plus more capacity.

do you own a Canyon reel? The price is not bad, many reels of that size cost more like the Accurate, Alutecnos, Duel, Everol, and some less like the Penn, shimano, and Avet. Only time will tell if they can stay in business more then a few years, looks like they have a good product though. I would like to play with one in person and crack it open.

Avets are my go to and I love them. There is no better deal then the Avet 80W for 650, it will catch 99% of fish swimming. The T-rex is a beast of a 50W but as of now the 100lbs of drag its puts out is worthless, know one can hold that drag on a fish, the 60lbs and capacity of the Avet 80W is a perfect set up.

Senators are not even in the same school as new lever drags, and IMO you cant put a vrs sign in between the new levers and old school Senators.

Senators are great reels and proved them self's time and time again, they can and will catch BIG fish, but if you go fish with some one who has a new lever drag and a old school 12/0 ... once that lever drag hits your hands you will never look back.
