avet exw 50/2 please i need input
I just purchased one for 479.00 was that a fair price? I will have it in a week or so. I was reading on avets web page that they recommend using tape as backing instead of mono? ive always used mono backing when fishing braid how ever I never had a reel that is going to be pushing that kind of drag.
is this reel worth the money ?
please respond!! thanks guys
The Avet 50w is a great reel. I did not put anything on the bottom of my spool before putting the braid on, and havent had any issues. Biggest fish to date on that reel for me is a 11'10" tiger. I have mine spooled with 600 yards of 130lb hollow braid and have it topped with about 350 yards of 100lb mono.
You can use either tape or mono or nothing. I dont think its a big deal. But definately put braid backing and then enough mono on top so that only the mono is sitting in the saltwater. You dont want the expensive and not resistant braid to be rubbing on the sand for hours while you are waiting for a bite.
Joe, I know there is alot of debate about putting tape on the spool, but I just copied and pasted this directly from Jerry Brown's Website...

"Myth Busting: The truth about line slipping on the spool etc.
Many mistakenly believe that Spectra® will slip on the spool unless you take Draconian measures to prevent it. Experience has clearly shown that putting on several layers of mono, Dacron or duct tape are totally unnecessary. This practice is not recommended to solve a problem that does not even exist. Braided line grips the spool much like tread on a tire grips the road better than a smooth one with an infinitely small contact area.
Before you start spooling, form a good knot, (such as the Berkley Trilene knot) cinch it tightly on one side of the spool leaving a long tag end to be laid across the arbor. Spool the first full layer of Spectra® onto the spool in a close side-by-side fashion under tension of 6 or more pounds over the tag end. If this is done, the line will not slip! No exceptions have been reported but try pulling on it at this point if you have any doubts. When convinced, you might tell a friend that it works."
Thats exactly right - no need for tape or mono if its done right to begin with.

I have a 9' 80lb gator glass. how do you think it will handle the rod?

Great catch. Looks like Jerry Brown has 2 different people writing articles for their site with different opinions...haha. That only proves my point though...you are going to get a ton of different opinions about this subject. Having said that, the 11'10" tiger I got didnt cause the braid to slip on the spool and I dont have any tape or mono on there. If 40+ lbs of drag for an hour and a half wont make it slip, then I doubt anything would.
I take the braid and wrap it 4 times around the spool before tying off your knot - this keeps at least 4 wraps on the spool under the tension of the knot - then proceed to wrap the first and second full rows under approximately 6-8lbs of pressure - after that continue on and wrap as tight as you can get it - should feel hard like a rock when done - if not you will have some type of trouble.
I never had a problem spooling braid. I just have been reading up and I was curious.
I should have the avet next week or so. Going to have to break it in. I'm in port st lucie
if anyone wants to go let me know and as time gets closer ill be back in touch
