Avet 50w vs Penn 14/0

I currently have an Avet 50w that I really enjoy for sharking, its light weight and has heavy drag. Although I havent caught any sharks on it its probably been used 7 or 8 times at a beach I found to be a ghost town. I hear too many people telling me im going to get dumped and spooled so I want to upgrade. I know senators have been landing big sharks for decades and their the most basic setup when it comes to sharking. I would like your opinion on whether I should sell my Avet, which is on an old 6'6" 50-80 rod with 500 yards of 130 lb braid with 100 lb mono topshot. and get a 14/0 maybe on a 8 or 9 foot rod.

Stay with the Avet 50w it will not fail you. if you do any upgradeing go up to the 80W Avet.

Don't know to much about the avets besides they have a lot of drag. But I fish 2 14/0 and soon a 10/0 and 16/0. ((( They get the job done & there a CLASSIC))) an I can count on them. I wouldn't trade them for any other brand name reel out there. I say upgrade to a 14/0 if you can handle it.

don't wait too long!!! the 14/0's are already out of production, so the longer u wait the less likely you will be able to find one and you can mod out the drag in the senators for more than most people can handle to hold on to.

Also I think you should be able to handle a 14/0 if you put it on a lighter rod like 80-130, and not on a tuna stick, im almost 17 and about 150lb's, ive had experience with the 14/0s, they can take beating after beating and still catch you big sharks, thats y people still have their old senators from 40 years ago :)

Im not saying the avets are bad, but they havent been on the market too long and so far they are pretty good reels, but now all thats left is to see if they can withstand the test of time.

Plus, any old timer can whip out a photo album and showw you all teh catches on their trusty senators

Just an average fisherman.

i would read e polks post in this topic he shines light on pros and cons on a senator and a lever drag avet
viewtopic.php?f=37&t=2754&start=30

the senators can take a beating and jump back in to the fight the lever drags may have more drag but that little bit of sand in them can majorly mess them up. dont get me wrong if you are fishing from a boat i would go with avet or lever drags but beach a senator is where its at. just because your 16 doesnt mean you cant handle a 14/0. yes they are heavy but when you factor in the drag when locked down on a avet its wanting to pull out of your hands so its almost the same. manasota coty on here is 15 or 16 and he fishes a 14/0 and he can handle.

i have both an avet 80w and a penn 16/0 though i love the penn 16/0 because of its history and line capacity my avet is an all around better reel. not only for the drag. everyone always mentions the drag when they hear the word avet but truly the reel is very good. you can soak it in salt water all day and take it out the next morning and it will still work like its right out of the box. in the end if your looking for line capacity put braid on that 50 and a small topshot of mono and you will prob have more line than i do on my 16/0. In the end its all about preference like i said i have both and i love my 16 as much as i love my avet but for a comfortable more reliable fishing experience id stay with the avet or like travis said upgrade to the 80w

Keep the avet bro. It has the capability to stop monsters with the way ya spooled it. And trust me, it is just as easy to take apart and clean as a Senator. Tough reels

Keep the avet get a senator next. The 14 and 16 is more to hold on to and if ya give me the choice while fighting a big fish its 14 or 16 all the way. they just fit in ya arms and dont move back and forth when ya try to reel. I and my team have caught around 20 fish this year on the 80w avet mostly off the pier. Sand will clog it up. Braided line have some very unlikable charitics. Its easy cut and it has alot of wax so it dont float and it dont sink well so it catches alot of current and drifts bad. The 14 or 16 allows ya to put cheeper-larger diameter lines like dacron and mono on top or the braid so ya dont have to have that expensive line in the water to be cut off by a passing manta or a hungry blue fish. 14 or 16 gives ya many more options, and actually my 12/0 is lighter than my 80w. Anyway when a big fish is on, its nice to gain a few needed pounds and the weight of the reel dissapears. Just reeling a big bait in tells the story.

All that e-polk said.
I wasn't going to chime on this thread again as a number of members are very fund of the AVETS, it's not that the AVETS are bad reels by any means, it's just that a lever drag is NOT a good beach-bound shark fishing reel by design, due to the all aluminum costruction and the close tolerances and the drag/drag plate cover tends to accumulate salt, whereas a Senator is so simple and only has two sealed ball bearings and the rest is all bushings, the person(s) that said you can fish an AVET from the beach on a regular basis and all you have to do is hose it off with fresh water has NOT openned up his AVET after a year or two of beach fishing, "It's just as simple to service an AVET as it is to service a Senator" is also far from the truth (no offense).

Put it this way:
-Shark fish from the beach with a lever drag (AVET, International, Tiagra, etc.) and be ready for yearly servicing (at the very least)
-Fish a Senator and even after abuse and neglect it will continue to perform for many years, with the exception of the occasional drag washer replacement (which by the way can be reached by just removing the handle and star drag in the Senators 10/0 thru 16/0.
I serviced William's 16/0 not too long ago and in spite of use and abuse and many sharks caught it would have lasted another 10 years without servicing, that will never be the case with a lever drag, AVET, International or Tiagra.
