748-Pound Shark Caught Off S. Fla.
Caught On Video: Fishermen Capture Massive Shark

POSTED: Tuesday, October 6, 2009
UPDATED: 8:54 am EDT October 6, 2009

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- A massive shark was caught off the coast of Fort Lauderdale, and it was all captured on video.

A group of friends were fishing about 18 miles off the coast of Ft. Lauderdale Sunday when they stumbled across 10-foot-long, 750-pound shark feeding on a swordfish.

Jamie Bunn, who videotaped the event, watched as his three friends tried to capture the creature.

"I vividly remember the quote 'We might as well get this thing. Someone's dying today,'" Bunn told Local 10's Rob Schmitt Monday.

It took quite a while to capture the shark. The group tried using the dead swordfish to lure her close to the boat and capture her.

In the video, the struggle was made clear when one of the men screamed, "I'm afraid to lean over. If I fall over i'm dead."

In the end, the fishermen were successful in their attempt.

On a scale at the marina, the shark weighed in at 748 pounds.

It's a fish story the men said they'll remember for the rest of their lives.

"Our kids will be talking about that fish for who knows how long," Jeremy Huston said.

Florida state fishing regulations allow licensed fishermen to capture sharks that are not on the endangered species list. It is not yet clear what type of shark these men caught.

Thanks for sharing that with us Greg.Mako is excellent table fare but what is not fair is that such a great game fish is taken in an unsportsman like fashion .Do you guys think most fisherman release or harvest mako sharks when caught on rod and reel?I think that's a good question if we could get some credible percentages somehow.

those punks are rich boys on a 3 million dollar sport fish!! do you think those peanut brains needed shark meet to feed there fisher island based family??? I under stand you are a guy broke fishing from land and you catch your dream catch and decide on keeping it for its meet and trophy jaws, even to weight it, but come on free gaffing a poor confused shark that you have no use, respect,or knoledge of is str8 up Bull Shiiii!! would have rather seen billy dean parker, and dick bob johns both slip and fall in after pinching the mako !!! that would have been less sad seeing billy dean get munched!!!!

Free Country, we can choose to hate or like and everybody is entitle to their opinions, whether their opinion stinks or not! But what this guys did was definitely unsportmanlike and ILLEGAL! Sharks are to be harvested by hook and line according to the law!

theres noway you can be proud of a fish thats cought like that!!!!Thats not fishing!for that matter why not shoot him with the ought 6 and call it what it is.Would have been easier! The hook goes in the mouth not in the back! The title should read"748-pound mako killed off fort lauderdale" They sure as hell didnt catch it!

Ya wanta see one caught right just look at mine. Cant say i would not have tryed something though. I would have used what i have to land it, but is it something to be PROUD of? My Mako was targeted and worked for and i am as proud of it as any thing as i ever done because that is what i worked to make happen. I would rather have my ILSFA world record than any boat caught IGFA. Because thats what I do and what is in my reach.
