6/0 question
I know how you guys love your big 16/0s, but all i have at the moment is a 6/0, so my question is what should i fill it with to give me a shot at larger sharks? The beaches i fish are generally pretty sandy bottom so getting cutoff with braid isn't necessarily a huge concern. Any input is appreciated.
Hey FishinFool91:
I have both of my 16/0 reels loaded to the bars with 180 Gudebrod Dacron line. I do not have any problems with being cut off. I use a float on the top of my leaders. Floats are not good for places where boating trafic can be a hazzard but, floats do work and they will save your Dacron line. It's a choise you have to make...

They have like 16lbs of drag
With the HT-100 Carbon Drag Upgrade and a Stainless Steel Gear Sleeve Upgrade I get 25#+ out of my Penn 6/0.
From what I've read on Alan Tani's site, some guys have worked with Dawn at Smoothdrag.com and have been able to find thinner SS washers and thinner Carbon washers and have been able to stack even more in the upgrade than the typical 5+1, HT-100, drag upgrade. That's gonna REALLY improve that drag. At some point you definitely do have to look at strengthening the frame and spool. Problem is, I don't know at what # drag you need to start looking at a frame or spool upgrade for a (Penn) 6/0.
my 4/0 breaks 65..so a 6/0 breaking 80 i dont think is outta the Q. i think i put 5-600 yrds and left room for a 100yrds of topshot
I think im gunna put 500 yards of 80lb braid, how much 80lb mono topshot would that leave?
For a Penn 6/0
If it's a good quality braid with normal diameter - my best guess would be that you'd get about 150+ yards of 80# mono top shot on it. Maybe a tad more. Pack it all on tight!
If you do the drag upgrade and can get 25#+ drag, plus have 650yards of line on it ... You're getting a nice set up for not a lot of money. There are many good shark fisherman that can land a respectable shark on a set up like that. IDK about big hammers, but you can definitely land some mediumish hammers and stud bulls on that if you know how to fish it right.
-With that heavy line (IF you have gloves on) you can pinch the side of the spool against the side plate to add drag on a heavy run and/or prevent getting spooled.
IF I had to do my drag upgrade all over again, I'd contact Dawn at Smoothdrag.com, work with Alan Tani, and have them help me find thinner drag washers to stack even more of them in my drag area. I've heard of guys getting close to 30# of drag off of a super upgrade. I'm sure you'll need a Tiburon frame & spool for a small SUPER Penn reel like that.
