1. Is there a way of telling what the right time is to set the hook so the fish isn't gut hooked ?
2. Has anyone had good luck using circle hooks ?
3. What are the advantages of braided wire over single strand ?

I have tried both circle hooks and J-hooks and the majority of the time I end up hooking them in the corner of the mouth regardless.

As far as single strand vs cable I tend to use both as part of my rig. I usually use around 4 or 5 feet of single strand conected to around 10 feet of cable. I use # 19 wire as my single strand and connect it to the cable with a large swivell that way i can connect a balloon to the swivell and have the bait float a little ways down. A shark will have an easier time biting through the cable but the cable sure easier to hold onto when leadering a big fish. Also when single strand wire gets kinked up for multiple use then I can just cut the 4 or 5 feet off and added another 4-5 foot piece of 19 wire to the cable which tends to last quite well.
