??? Technique for Securing Bait & Claw Weight While Yaking?
Question - How do you secure your Bait and Weight in your yak as you run the bait out? Also, I've read that some guys have a technique to deal with their 40-100ft feet of sliding trace that wants to get tangled as it's in the wash when you are boarding the boat. What's your technique to deal with long sliding traces?
When Yaking bait out, I place my bait behind my Yak seat (trying to keep that hook behind my body, away from flesh - in case it gets suddenly pulled out of the kayak.) The rock or claw weight goes in the storage area behind the seat. The mono trace & bite leader just hangs loose in the ocean. My storage area has those elastic black chords crossing over it. If the weight starts to pull overboard the elastic chording will usually catch it and prevent the weight from escaping.
How do you secure your weight and bait in your Yak?
How do you deal with those extra long sliding traces?
I paddle mine in a canoe. I have a thwart in the center that goes across like a crossbar. I hook my weight up on it and my hook in my bait either hangs right next to it or sits in a 5gal that is zip-tied to the thwart so Im not sitting in bloody stingray slime (I have no seats and sit on the floor). My leader trails alongside/behind in the water. I used to just keep my weight in the boat with me when I used a breakaway like a brick or sandbag but Had my bait get hit while I was paddling out once and got spun around and dragged backwards like an amusement park ride like an idiot
NEVER AGAIN will I "slow troll" a bait out! ![]()
Your yak sounds similar to mine with the elastic cords.. i took mine out just for the hell of it too make things easier baits sometimes would get tangled in them, i just throw my bait in the back of the yak with leader i have a cleat on the side of the kayak right next to my seat i place my mono around so i dont loose my rig as for weight i usaually use a break away rock which sits firmly in the yak!.. the most complicated rigs are the ones that dont work!!
