was out in New Smyrna this past Sat 3/2/13, got us some Pompano! Weather was cold, nothing biting in the first 2 hrs, then we started pulling these in along with some whiting!

These are different from permit right? I am guessing they are, but there are very close looking.
Good shark bait?
Good eating?

Yes very close to permit, but don't get anywhere near the size of permit.

I have not had pompano before, but from what I have read it is the most sought after saltwater fish, tasting much like mahi mahi. It actually gets the highest price from commercial fisherman.

Will be cooking some up in a few days, and will report back!

I know some guys who eat the hell outta them and LOVE em but the one time I ordered it at "the Hurricane" I thought it was fishy as hell, kinda like the mistake of frying up Ladyfish when I was a kid  It was grilled with the skin on which Im sure made a difference. I skin and fry everything, but "To each their own" ;).

POMPANO, supposed to be really good
, these are the fish that I ended up in a school of, at Venice ,they were all around me, seemed as curious about me as I was about them , they swirled all around me [ w/mask/snorkel/fins] they were all close enough to touch & unafraid

It was around $14/lb for pomps a few years back.
Also one of the best baits for cuda.
