Mullet Run - A little bit of everything

(@snook-hunter)
Noble Member

I did a little Mullet Run fishing, very little, this year due to a crazy schedule. None the less - it was still fun.

I tried a bridge for the first time with a buddy and we brought up some snook and tarpon after freelining mullet for 30 seconds.

I caught few morning cudas on lures

I got a few cudas with my son (Tarponator).

We also spent some time on the beach with cut bait and he had fun reeling in a few nurse sharks.

I spent some time trolling around a wahoo rig on a 50w with no luck.

I did land a few kings and bonitas on light tackle.

I had my dad's 1980 fenwick restored and gave it to him for his bday and we landed over 100 2lb jacks. I wasn't able to find the monster jack. Either way, I'm good for blacktip bait and got my dad back into surfcasting.

I had opportunities with about 4 to 5 blacktips, but for one reason or another it wasn't meant to be for me (I have to learn not to hand the rod over to friends/family). One blacktip stands out though and probably always will with the Tarponator and myself.

I educated my son for about the 5th time in 5 min. to get out of the water now the sun is setting. He doesn't listen until I get a jack on and he jumps up and steals the rod. He brings the jack into about 10 inches of water, exactly where he was lying 2 min. before and I reach down to get the jack and a blacktip comes in and rips it from my hands. I think the shark hydroplaned into the shallows and he was fast. I yell, "DId you see that, I told you not to be in the water at sunset." He yells back, "I GOT A SHARK. I GOT A SHARK>>AHHHHHHHHH HELP.. I GOT A SHARK and don't touch the rod." He fought the tip on 15lb braid, 1 ounce white jig and a fast action 7ft rod for about 5 min. I tighten the drag a few times since we were getting low and i was afraid my reel was going in the water so I got the rod and fought it for about 10 more min. and was making progress and said to myself, "I'll have this in within 3 min." POP. The 20lb mono leader slipped from the 15lb braid and we lost the fish or as my son says. I lost the fish. He likes to be referred to as the SHARKINATOR now. I put the leader togethere quick for 2lb fish, not 80lb sharks - OH WELL- The one that got away.

I did get this monster cuda on a 30lb mono leader and a 4/0 circle with a freeline mullet. Its a monster and I had to fold it in half to fit in my cooler and I have a nice size cooler.

I was looking for Marcus aka "the shark wrangler" I heard he got a girlfriend and just got engaged last week. That's awesome I heard his new finace loves to shark fish as well. Do you know if they will be fishing together in the black tip challenge?

Well anyways great post again chris!

That's the kind of fishing I like to do, take some light tackle and explore some new spots, nice fish.

Just an average fisherman.

Those are some nice Van Staals you got! Make sure you treat that gold one good because Van Staal are discontinuing the gold ones, probably end up being collectibles.
