I'lltell you how NOT to catch them.....
we were swimming,&I was snorkeling all along Venice beach one day ,
Came across a school, they seemed just as curious about me as I was about them, swirling all around me , really checking me out as I was doing the same with them ,Now usuallyI was very cautious ,always watching for ....whatever....you know.
The Pompano were so busy looking me over I got kinda mesmerized by how they swirled around & around & just eased along hoping they'd stick around, & got down near the bottom, , my chest was just a few inches off the bottom so I put one hand down & pushed off.....Luck was with me that day, A Ray about 20# maybe rocketed up out of that sand under my chest , brushed my arm on the way,was gone before I could do anything .
I almost had put my chest right on top of him ,never saw him.
Doesn't pay to be stupid & get distracted........

Yeah almost , & the bad thing was ,I am always careful [or try to be] , & watch for stuff like that ,& when I'd wade along Plug casting ,trying to catch Snook or whatever we'd be after ,I "shuffle " along, & I'd see rays take off out ahead of me so I know it works , plus I've never [ Thank GOD } been stung
That ray was under the sand

to try & answer the original question on this thread.....I've caught them on jigs small ones yellowgreen or / limegreen or Chartreuse w/ MARABOU feathers if you can find any of the floating jigheadsw/marabou,then put sinker ,slider is best 12"+ ahead of your jig; that way it "suspends"
Whoever mentioned the SABIKI rigs is right too
Those rigs catch EVERYTHING ,you never run out of bait if you have Sabiki ,freshwater too ,baitfish love those things.
I had a bunch of Sabiki rigs with flourescent Red/orange ,I got years ago and
that color works in fresh water .
We fished the fresh water NYC Reservoirs oin upstate NY,
loaded with "Sawbellies" [baitfish ; Alewives}
They love sabikis, always get multiple "hookups" on Sabiki rigs LOL
but the Big Brown Trout & Lakers , in the Reservoirs,love Sawbellies, so it all turns out OK

We'd get sand fleas along the beach waterline at Venice & then try to get Pompano ,when we didn't [ alot] we'd go out on the one [ of the 2 ] 'jetty 'by where you can park ,go out towards the tip, & back from the end & fish the side that's facing the other jetty , & catch Sheepshead[ love them fileted& fried in Italian breadcrumbs/olive oil }

It's called a pompano rig, 3 hooks on one rig, cut up shrimp or sand fleas work, pyramid sinker on bottom.
