Fishin

School has been intense this semester, yet I have still found some time for fishin. Since late summer I've found myself drifting over the dark waters of the gulf stream sporadically on friday nights. My last very last second but unmoving decision to go fishing sometimes do not work out for my usual fishing buddies, and I have found myself taking friends out fishing for their first time and have enjoyed teaching them and watching them enjoy the sport like I do. In my pursuit of swordfish the gladiators of the sea, I spent many a night drifting for 12 hrs without a hit. For some reason instead of discouraging me it only motivated me more to get out there and earn my swordfish. When you arent getting a hit chances are you may be doing something wrong so I did my resarch, changed my rigs up and began letting them to depth according to moon phase and time of night. I had talked to raymundo and johny the guy from and the guy from IGFA who helped me test my new fishing line and the trip was set. I called Will but he was already planning on heading to the west coast for a club gathering. Three hours before we were all starting to meet up, the calls rang in, Raymundo had to wait for someone that was late to fix something at his house, johnny had a last minute charter in the mornin and jacks boat mechanic had messed up the previous day so he had to pick up his boat a day late. I called up my sister whos usually goodluck (caught my first 300+ bull with her) and my friend jimmy from UM and they both said theyd come. We got a later start but we were out at swordfish grounds by 930. I put out three rods and I'm rigging up a squid for the 4th rod .. when ZZZZZZZZZ the third rod I had put out starts screamin drag. We get my sis hooked up in a harness and the fight is on.

My sis fights the fish for a good half an hour and jimmy takes over... at around 10:45 I take a shift on the fish and I see the light aproaching from the darkness (which means that the fish is within 100 feet of the boat so I'm about to hand the rod over to my sis so I can get the gaff ready... WHEN THE HOOK PULLS!!!I Needless to say after fighting the fish and chasing it for over an hour.. we were pretty discouraged. I re-rig everything up.. and put it back out. At around 2am we get another hit.. its first run alone is 500 yards and brings me down to my braid. We regain on the fish chasing it everytime it reaches the braid. At 4am the fish is still not showing any signs of tiring.. WHEN THE HOOK PULLS AGAIN!!!! After an action packed night.. we are all tired.. and we head in quite discouraged.. but not denying that we had an awesome night.

By the next Fri everyones heard of the last weeks adventures and wants to go.. but the forecast says its guna be to rough to go out. I go to the boat cuz ive gotta clean it .. and steve (pewee) volunteers to join me. We drive by the beach and see how wrong the forecast is and call eddie to join us.. because to hell with the forecast.. We're goin fishin. I call eddie and he says he'll meet me at the boat.. in an hour.. me and steve run to get some bait.. and when we return eddies with his friend Jose at the dock. We head out .. into the darkness.

A couple hours in I start to get restless. I yell "COME ON SWORD!" and I kid you not... a second later the rod starts to scream. I have the drag set a lot looser this time.. so we end up fighting for a while longer then we should have.. but the hook doesnt pull.. and WE"VE GOT OUR SWORD!

I wake up Sunday morning spent from that horrible UM game the night before and head home to do hw...Sunday afternoon rolls around.. and its just way to nice to be inside doing hw.. I take some girls from school to catch their first fish and they have fun with big runners and lil bonitas while we catch bait. I take em to get a sail.... but no hits.. at least they had fun. This past weekend I had a lotta fun puttin ppl on the fish. Not guna lie it feels good to be a the captain =).
