First Goliath
Went out to Big carlos pass Sunday evening on an outgoing tide looking to get hooked up on a shark or poon but nothing was biting. Once the tide went slack I decided to go for my first goliath and it did'nt take too long before I was hooked up! He had my 9/0 50-80lb set up doubled over and then knew I was in for a fight! I didn't know they fought that hard and can't wait till the big boy hits my bait next time!

Just Curious - Sounds like you are pulling around 25#ish drag with that Penn 9/0 on a nice stiff rod for the 9/0. I'm trying to get figured out what it takes to begin to turn a decent size Goliath. Those things have got a lot of weight behind them. Props to you for battling them!
Does anyone know if drag ranging 25# or 35# or 45# is what it takes to begin to turn the average Goliath?
I had another big one on the other night that I couldn't turn around!
I landed two over the 6 1/2 foot mark one on 50lb test and the other on 60lb test mono, both on my stock Penn International 30TW, but that was on the sand. I dont know what kind of drag they can physically put out stock but you could likely find it online somewhere or someone here may have measured it out. If you're asking what it would take to stop a 6footer in his tracks Id say you need an Avet 80 Wide or bigger spooled up with 400lb-500lb leader material or something
. Although Ive landed some huge ones on the Skyway on my TLD 25 spooled with 200lb Tuffline, but there has been plenty of "unstoppable" ones
.
10 foot rod hosed up, doubled up 130, 150, or 200 lb mono. just let the rod bend all the way through and slingshot that fish out of the pilings, anything reallyy huge try and hook it away from the pilings and tire it out while its in open water. but thats from a bridge
