Eagle Rays for the seaquarium and Carp
Day 1:
Changed it up the past two days. We have some bonefish tags sittin in concrete blocks in biscayne bay to see how long it takes em to deteriortate.. we have em in a couple different bonefish habitats. Ones in the west end of the bay down by burger king headquaters.. down there I took a couple casts as we were leavin and had a nice 10lb bone chasin up my jig.. for some reason it turned last second... mighta been somethin to do with the 8 foot bull shark we saw about a minute later
.. good thing Mike wasn't in still in the water.. sucks we didnt have anything rigged up for the bull. Next we headed out to lewis cut.. and we're reading the tag numbers figuring out if any are missin.. and we painfully watch a school of about 10 decent sized tarpon swim by. Next we head out to the ocean side to check our last blocks and as Mike and I read the tag numbers, Charlie (an aquarist from the seaquarium) jumps in the water to collect ornamentals. As we're leaving he tells us that as he was collecting he saw two 30lb permit go by
!! Well we saw a grand slam but we didnt catch any. We're done with the blocks so we head out to a flat to catch charlie an eagle ray for the seaquarium.. he has a permit but only for a certain size.. so we have to pass up on about 20 rays that swim by us.. finally he lets me take a cast at one... ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ we chase it for a while.. ZZZZZZZZZZZZ lets just say these things put up a very impressive fight on 15lb spinning tackle.... We get it up to the boat.. about ten times and each time he takes equally energetic runs.. finally impatient I put a little more pressure on him boatside..and pop! Lost him! We look for more.. passing up on a ton because they were to big for the permit.. and then we finally find one which is perfect size. I hook up and after a 10-15 minute fight I've got him in the boat and in the kiddie pool we have set up in the front of the flats boat. We run to the seaquarium and are met by about 5 aquarists who help us hoist the ray up into a tank on a cart.. its headed off for quarantine to make sure that it doesnt have anything that would effect the southerns and cownose rays in the touch tank. I then meet up with Chris (snookhunter) from boyton to do some tarpon fishin.. unfortunatley the tarpon werent hittin.. but even though we had a little incedent with the trolling motor
we still had fun with the mangroves... and unfortunatley missed a I kid you not 40 INCH snook that came up for my live mullet.
Day 2:
Went up to broward to try and get some carp on fly with the fallin berries.... saw some monsters.. not as many as there could be but its early in the season. Left Mike fishin.. not sure if he got any.. but I had to head down to Miami to talk to Court at Cpt. Harrys about some bullbuster line stuff. Hope to get some fishin in tonight.
Gotta LOVE SUMMER

Nice report Colby thanks for the details.Back in 80's we would fish Bimini in April and one of the first things we did when we got on the Bahama bank right in front of Bimini was find the scholls of eagle rays and snag one for shark bait.We would snag only one big one 150 lbs for the entire trip -cut it up in 6 pieces .Never ever had a better bait then an eagle ray.Aside from fighting like demons on a Penn jigmaster with 50 lb test they were the bait of choice for the monster sharks. To make a long story short some of the catches on eagle ray.
13 ft 8 inch Hammer
13 ft tiger
678 lb Tiger
586 lb Tiger and countless others I can't recall right now.
I'm glad we don't kill Eagle rays anymore because when we approch the Bahama bank now we don't see the size schools of past years.

Biscayne Bay was beautiful and I had a great time with Colby and Greg. We had two very large catches!!!!!
*70lb trolling motor that was about 7 hrs old caught by Colby with 50lb braid, Penn 704z reel and what use to be my 7ft rod.
*Greg caught a 170lb Cuban with my assistance or should I say lack thereof.
I thought Greg was going to have a stroke since the trolling motor was 7 hrs old and his third one this year due to many issues. Colby performed surgery and removed the prop and Greg assisted. Everything worked out fine. I should have taken some photos of the surgery; however I was to busy chuckling.
Earlier in the day I heard a person rhythmically screaming for about 5 min., but I focused on tying my Tarpon leaders. Greg hears the screaming and checks it out, that’s what firemen do. An 80 year old Cuban gentleman fell out of the boat and was holding onto the line between the boat and dock for at least 5 min. Greg calls for me and I grab my camera.

The water was about 5ft deep and the gentleman does not swim. Greg pulled the boat in and held onto the man.

The gentleman was exhausted and moments away from drowning if it wasn’t for Greg. He didn’t have the strength to stand up or even sit up for the 1st few minutes.
Here are some other photos from the day.
