Im really new to LBSF and was wondering how often do you guys cut the hook rather than dehooking it from the shark. I see a lot pics on here with people holding bolt cutters. If you do cut it do you just buy new hooks everytime?

I usually cut the hook if I can't get it out. Or I try to cut the eye of the hooks and pull them through. But I always try the dehooker first and if unsuccessful I cut it!!! I stock up pretty good on the hooks when I can.

I've always just used a big pair of channel locks. If it's in deep then cut.

You Have To Use Your Best Judment When Trying To Dehook Sharks...Be Safe Cause The Best Oppuritunity For The Shark To Get You Is When You Go For The Hook. I Feel Its Better To Let Him Have That $0.75 cent Hook Than Too Loose Fingers :? ;)

J's if your low on money, I spend $1 max for a J hook if i'm lucky $.050

Circles if you have the money

Getting them out for me, is based on how easy it looks to get out.
And what type of shark it is, or how long the fight was.

Most of the time you can just pull
the hook through where the barb is sticking out from, then cut your cable or wire and re-tie or crimp your hook back on your rig.

I think Billy already said that though :D

j hooks you can cut your leader off put the leader through a pvc pipe and have some one pull the leader along side the shark and give it a nice pop with the pvc pipe hook should come right out. we have done this with the hooks on gaffs to dehook sharks.

Beat me to it Shawn! Yeah, I use my PVC rodholders as a dehooker. Theyre all chewed up by the ends from the sharks chewing on them but it doesnt really hurt them. Also if you cut a little "V" shaped notch in the end of the pipe for the bend of the hook it helps some but works without too. If the hook is just in there to well just let em have it. I use the Owner 11/0 and 12/0 JOBU hooks $15-18 bucks for a two pack and sometimes have to let em keep one. Just not worth killing something over a hook.

What brand of bolt cutters do you use?

I smash the barb down, it makes dehooking very simple and fast.
