Cay Sal bank(2007)
Decided a week ago to venture over to the Bahamas with some friends on two boats to fish Cay Sal bank .We were going over on my friend Johan's 29 OCEAN RUNNER and the other boat was a 32 CONTENDER.The 32 left Saturday morning we however spent most of the day trying to get the GPS fixed to no avail so we left at 6:30 in the afternoon navigating the old fashined way by nautical chart and parralels.Got there after right after sundown traveling at 40 mph the Depth Finder read 56 feet of water i knew we were on the bank.Anchored up for the night not a boat in sight and we decided to hook up with the 32 next morning, too dangerous to travel that bank at night without a gps to keep us off the treacherous rocks and reefs that sometimes stick up above the water.Fished til the sleep subdued us got a mess of yellowtails,a bunch of horse eye jacks, big blue runners, some dog snappers up to 6 lbs but no big grouper the reef sharks kept taking our big baits and the big Tiger sharks were no where to be found. Next moning we cruised due SE looking for our buddies on the 32 found them 20 miles from where we anchored that night. This place never ceases to facinate me so beautiful and unspoiled and the fish are so thick at times that I wish I could fish there
every week.My buddies on the 32 had 4 grouper on Hawain slings by the time we got there from 25lbs to about 40 lbs;these boys are champion
freedivers and it was eveident by there catch. That day we trolled the reefs for a while the fishing was a bit off,did some deep drops in 350
got some yelloweyes then decided to dive a while. After midday we tied up the two boats to relax and have some lunch to recoup our energy. Our lunch that day was fresh conch and yellowtail Ceviche with onions, lemon juice, cilantro, tomatoes, hot sauce and ice cold Coronas to wash it down.
In the afternoon we dove a spot that has three wrecks side by side -what a place to dive so magnificently beautiful and pristine, the water was crystal clear all the way down to 80 feet.We fished some more but the
sun and the dives had us on the brink of exhaustion;caught some big cudas and tails and decded to head back West for the long ride.Hope we can go back soon to that very special place.
