Bimini Trip-summer 2011

I've been pretty busy this Summer and havn't been on the website as much as I would have liked to. But I've had the time to do some good fishin. About a month ago we went on a trip to Bimini to see if we could take a shot at the muttom run. The seas were calm so it made for a good run over there.

On the run over to bimini we spooled all most of our reels with 12 lb test mono fishing line because we were plannin on puttin a hurtin on the reef fish with light tackle.

Steve spoolin up the secret yellowtail weapon

The first spot we got settup on was full of sharks, we couldn't even get a fish in to put back out as bait because everything would get sharked. It was probably the only time I've complained about too many sharks. We wasted all of our live bait in that fashion.

That night we settup just north of the Bimini channel with the multitude of other boats there to take advantage of the mutton run. It started off slow and I went to sleep around midnight to make sure I woke up early enough to get a good morning bite for trolling. At around 2 am my friend Jonathan woke me up saying the mutton bite is going off! I Woke up and he was right. Every bait got hit by a nice fish.

Eddie w/ a nice mutton

Heres what we caught that night

We trollled around all morning but we didnt even get a hit. We did some spearfishin for about an hour and steve shot a nice hog. I missed like three hogs and was getting pretty frustrated at how rusty my spearfishing had gotten, but managed to shoot one nice rock hind. We didn't even see any big blacks.

We dropped my friend Juice off on the island to return with his family later on during the week and then ran down to oceans cay to see what we could catch. Down at ocean cay the mackerel bite was going off! We cast knetted some live ballyhoo and within about an hour we had our limit on mackerel. We couldn't bottom fish any longer or even fish for pelagics because we had our limit so we headed back to do a swordfish drift and head back to miami.

While swordfishin we ended up hooking up on something that came straight up to the surface. We saw a long thin something of about 3 feet sticking out of the water and thrashing, it was either a BIG sword or a thresher shark, but we will never find out because it SHREDDED the 300lb monofilament swordfish leader.

At sunrise we packed up and raced to miami to clear customs clean the boat and get some sleep. It was an awesome trip and I'm looking forward to doing it again sometime soon.

Heres what we came back with:

The sharks were all by Great Isaac... I think they were all reef sharks. Didn't see a single shark by oceans, but I caught a six foot cuda on a live ballyhoo tryin for the macks.
