Last weekend we made a trip about 40 miles offshore to do some bottom fishing. We caught our limit on grouper at our first spot so we moved about 3 miles to a good aj spot, about 120' of water. After we pulled the first few 40-50lb ajs off the spot, the fish we were catching dropped in size to about 10lbs haha...we were about to move, my friend noe was hooked up and working on getting his small jack to the boat, While my live pinfish sat on the bottom untouched....as the jack neared the boat we saw a monster cobia following it up. Looked as if the cobia was going to attack it right in front of us! But when he saw the boat he started heading back down to the bottom. Everyone else on the boat was scrambling to find something to throw at it. While they were doing that I was in the process of reeling my bait up as fast as I could in hopes of catching the cobias attention! I stopped my bait about 20' under the boat and let it sit. Not even 15 seconds went by and it got smacked! I reeled tight and felt the fish on the other end. Knowing that that cobia had just took my bait gave me a miniature heart attack! Haha! No one else on the boat was aware that I just hooked the fish. I just about had the fish to the boat before it realized it was hooked. It came within a few feet of the surface and everyone on the boat saw the fish. Then the fight started. The fish made a few good runs before we had a shot at gaffing it. We got two gaffs in the fish and brought it into the boat! This was the first cobia I had ever caught! I've been trying for years with no luck. This fish weighed in at 73lbs! Not bad for a first fish....

Also I thought I'd post a few pictures from our last few trips!

107lb aj. $3500 first place fish

24lb mutton

Big mango

Doubled up on big red snapper

55lb cuberra

Another big red snapper

Limited out on just about everything!

Smaller cuberra

Taking up the dock!

Doubled up on big red grouper!

Thanks, lobster are hard to come by where we fish. Usually we just put down a big live bait. Blue runners...mangrove snapper....they are usually the first fish to bite when they are around! The 55lbr was caught on a pinfish. The last tournament we fished we had 2 live lobsters sitting on the bottom all night and no fish. It was very slow and hard to keep the lobster out of holes! But when the sun came up we moved and caught that 107lb aj along with a few in the 90 pound range. And again. Everyone was putting down giant blue tuners but the 107lbr ate a baby porgie

Thanks, and yes it's noe. Caught the cobia with a Friend Friend of mine who owns galatis marina out on Ana Maria island. It's a Viking. The other boat is owned by a friend of mine in Sarasota. We do a lot of tournaments with that boat. Team big game!

OMG !!! We're are you fishing ? It had to be one if these 3
Marquesses , Bahamas, or dry tortugas

The big AJs and red grouper makes me think dry tortugas

Right out of Sarasota on the west coast. These fish were caught anywhere from 40-110 miles offshore
