West Coast Mako Setup?
After drooling over the sharks you guys catch I have finally decided to try to start hunting the big boys out here.
I was thinking a 12/0, 14/0 or Avet 80w for the reel just because my funds are limited, but am open to any ideas.
For rods, custom is out of the question price wise, any good rods you would recommend?
I am just looking right now until I get a new job and have some money again. But I hope to be deploying baits by summer.
Also any tips you guys who have caught makos could give me would be cool.
Any tips for terminal tackle? Hooks? Wire/cable?
Earnie, Will you guys have caught makos any advice?
Being that you are in California I would concentrate on trying for a Great White being that they frequent your near shore waters and a 9 footer was recently caught from a beach there. Great whites grow to around 21 feet so if I were you I would be looking to buy the biggest Tiagra,Makaira,Duel or even a Penn 14 or 16/0.The great white is the dream shark the holy grail for any land-based shark fishermen BUT are protected by your state and federal laws so make plans for afast a release and ensure you dont injure or keep out of the water long.If you want to target makos the advantage is you can use the same gear for both species and another advantage is the makos are a tasty desired eating fish you can enjoy as table fare.

Will, it is illegal to target (fish specifically for or say that you want to catch) protected fish in California so that is why I am sticking with makos to avoid trouble.
Also, I would love a Makaira but I don't have the money.
I am also in contact with Nusharker and we are trying to make some trips for some bigger sharks after the new year, but he only has one setup, so I want to get my own.
