Their was some guy making 20/0's out of 14/0 reels. He called one of them "The General". The story made the sharkin forum circuit a couple years back.

This guy's name is Mel i have fished with him many times. the reel in the pictures is a 32/0 Custom, Mel as also made a 36/0 Custom called the "Megaladon". The 32/0 holds over 2 miles of 130 lb. mono. Mel has built 4 reels, 1 24/0, 2 32/0's and 1 36/0. But done forget they are customs they are not direct from Penn. If anyone would like any more info on his reel let me know.

Cape_Haze_Rods,

I have talked to Mel on the phone in the past a couple of times and he seemed like a nice guy. I have to give him props for creating such reel's. I also have pics of his LBSF fighting chair he sent me.

The reel I saw had a stock looking reel seat and had signs of pitting and corrosion, the reel handle was the old style counterbalanced type, the reel handle knob was a dark brown/green smaller than the later lighter green color knobs. At this point I don't even think they made 100 of these as the fellow named Chris claimed, based on experts I have contacted re. the 20/0 - some heard of it but have never actually seen one. Based on all the history and information it was either a prototype or some one extendeded the reel seat and had it re-chromed, as well as the spool and spacer bars. But the one I saw appeard factory made and showed all the sings of aging.

The one above is trully nice, I wonder if he machined a spool out of bar stock of if he just extended a stock Peen spool in which case making it spin true (straight) was probably a challenge. The reel seat and spacer bars are obviously easier to machine.

the 20/0 is called a blue print reel some one goes to penn and buys blue prints and then indentpendently produces the reel under penn's name i once saw a 130 international extra wide it was about 3 inches wider than a 130 wide regular i found out from the seller that the guy who made them bought the blue prints from penn and then built a bunch of them

if i understood the auction, the reel has been dialed in ,my take is it has been disassembled ,measured, and made assure that all part's are to desing specs,I.E,blueprinting an engine, all part's are balanced and made true to desing.still a 350 chevy is a chevy, and you can't bore it out,and put it in a dalorian and call it a new motor and sell it as a new engine desing, for me more power to the guy who spend the time to make the reel, the only thing he did not think about it if a fish smoke's lui's 14/0,what do you think will hapen to that reel with 2 miles of line.

First of all,if you are gonna widen A reel, make it A INTERNATIONAL 130 or something that will hold 100 miles of line with tru drag that will make it worth your wild....2nd,the man that makes that reel should be A shark reel fabricater and make A career doing that crazy shit so that I can have him widen my 16/0 in the future!!!!!!!        8-) 8-) "FOR SHARK FISHERMAN BY SHARK FISHERMAN"

TimmyT why widen an international 130 that has roughly 70lbs of drag when a reel available off the shelf dwarfs the 130 and has significantly more drag pressure?
