I was not going to post on this happening since I thought no one would believe me but since some one else saw the Craigslist add about the 20/0 I will tell!!!
At 5:15 am on Friday morning I looked in Craigslist and I could not believe my eyes!!!
At 4:45 am a fellow named Chris had posted about the 20/0 Senator for sale!!!
I was the first caller to see the add!!!
Right away I smelled a rat... a 20/0 Senator???
At 8:30 am I contacted my friend and world known Big Game Antique reel collector and expert, Tom Greene owner of Custom Rod and Reel of Light House Point, Fl.
I was up and gone with $2,000 in my pocket to see the 1 of 100 Penn Senators 20/0's made in 1949 for fishing the Great Barrier Reefs of Australia made exclusivelly to target Caracharodon carcharias I spoke to the husband of the seller a lady who's grandfather owned the reel!!!
Chris was located in South Beach but the reel was in Key West, I hit the turnpike and set out via Key West, I made it just in time to see the tail end of the deal with somebody else as Chris' wife gave directions to her location in case the other "serious" buyer felt thru, well i was too late but I saw the 20/0 Senator with my own eyes!!! it was in fair to poor cosmetic condition, it was the same diameter as a 16/0 (I had brought a measuring tape) but it was about 1 inch wider than the 16/0 and almost 2 inches wider than the 14/0. I did not sleep Friday night and I got into an argument with my wife for no aparent reason. I'm still upset about the whole thing and missing out on the chance of a life time, I was 10 minutes too late, it was a wider 16/0 diameter reel with the 3 piece spool. I came so close, the chance of a life time, I told the guy if he changed his mind... he smiled and said "OK" but had no interest in taking down my phone number.

hoogan, was the reel you saw the same as in the picture,if it was you saw a fake that is a 10/0,fix to look like a 20/0,notice the single screw hole behind the lever on the outer ring,12/0-10/0 have a single screw 14/0-16/0 have 2 screws for doulble bars front top and back.also there is a guy that made 3 16/0 into what he called 24/0 or something like that on the west coast of florida.he wanted about the same for the reels,if this freind of you'res up in light house told you that they are for real, you think that at least one would surface somewhere in the world,o yeah! don't forget pattent infringement.

also notice that the part # for the free spool lever screw is 116 witch is a 10/0 or a 12/0.
when i seen the craigs list ad i called Penn and confirmed that there was never a penn reel 20/0 or a penn senator limited edition 20/0 made. there was not even a prototype 20/0 made ever so this reel was a fake.

Folks If Tom Greene said they are authentic Then They Are authentic.Tom Greene is the the world renowned authority on collectible reels and fishing memorabilia and if Hoogan says he was there and saw it there is no arguement that the reel was real.

My story of the 20/0
My friend Rene de Dios (rip)and I were always looking for an edge in our shark fishing and pursuit for the biggest monsters and the chance to break a world record so back in the 70's and 80's we were constantly looking for any reel bigger then a penn 16/0.We wanted a reel that we could not get spooled or a rod that would bend to the extreme but not break .We heard about a Von Hoffe 22/0 and a Ocean City 18/0 but we were young and did not know if such animals really existed and back then there was no internet for a quick search so we did the best we could to find bigger reels but never found them.Anything related to monster fishing we looked into and our obsession kept us looking for bigger and better gear.

Friday morning June 18,2010
I saw snookhunter's post the 20/0 story and that morning I was in my Key Largo property and on the phone with Travis and we talked about that reel so i looked it up on Google and found the article on it being a fake so I posted Buyer Beware,,,,,,,No Problem--I enjoy detective work so I decided to call the number anyway and hear the line of BS from the seller of the fake 20/0 himself .There was no answer but I left a messege .I was working on my property that afternoon when some friends dropped by and invited us to go to key west so I said what the hell "Let's go".While I walking down Duval street with a margarita in my hand and the friends, wife and kids doing some window shopping my phone rings and it's a guy with a Puerto Rican accent calling from a 909 area code phone telling me the reel belongs to his father in law and is available but all the way in KEY WEST so I tell him "Hey I'm in Key West and I'd like to see it"he tells me he'll call me back and I'm telling myself this guy ai'nt gonna call back there is no Penn 20/0.I'm having some appetizers on mallory square watching the sun set when the guy calls me back that the 20/0 has been sold for the asking price of $2000.I'm thinking if this whole thing was a prank why is he telling me it's sold??Very strange indeed.
I"m left with the thought in my mind "was this whole thing real or not"Was there really a 20/0 in key West.

From Hoogan's post i think I also came very close to owning a real collectible 20/0.Very Bizzare, the whole thing was surreal with us just being in the keys and in particular in key west as this whole thing unfolded.
Thanks to my friend Chris (snookhunter)for posting the initial story and thanks to my friend Art(Hoogan)for taking the chance of owning a historic piece of Big Game Fishing and in particular MONSTER FISHING.Great work guys !!This is what makes this such a unique website and every one of you is making it better with articles and stories like this.Thank you

I understand the skeptisism from everyone.
I will tell you this as far as items that are not in catalogues and items that were never documented and so on. I am also a classic car enthusiast and over the years I bought and sold 65 - 73 Mustang parts, specially NOS (new old stock) high performance Ford "muscle parts" form '60 thru 70's
I have owned and have seen multiple factory cars and engines that were prototype that NEVER made it to any book.
I currently own an aluminum intake manifold for a 351-Cleveland of which less than a dozen were made and is NOT in the books.

I saw the 20/0 Senator, it was nothing more than a 16/0 with a wider reel seat, wider spacer bars and a wider old style 3-piece spool. It was a prototype, it is not in any books and it did not take much for the Penn machinists of the time to add 1-inch to the spacer bars, to the 3-piece spool and to the reel seat. Over the years Penn has made hundreds of prototypes that never made it to the books.
Actually I was very upset because I was the first caller at 5:15 am Friday morning and I did not have first takes.

if the reel sold then why is it posted back up for sale?

Now, it looks like it's out of control, different people posting diferent adds.
This current add in Craigslist is not the original add, now there are at least two adds going around...
Is that Loui's hairy back at Long Key?

I saw the same thing and wondered"what the f#%k is going on here"???There must be a copycat out there that wants to play games.

What I will say is this "those that are out there and have the will, time, and Money to buy collectible reels or anything valuble for that matter can build wealth while pursuing a passion".

In essence you are saying: money talks-bullshit walks.... I understand where you are coming from.
First let me tell you that I'm probably the most disappointed soul in this whole deal, since I saw the add at 5:15 am Friday morning and was on my way to Key West with $2000 in my pocket and making plans to do an exclusive post in this forum SFSC and then contact my good friend Capt. Mike Genoun owner of South Florida Sportfishing Magazine and write up an article there as well, and from there go see Tom Greene at Custom Rod and Reel.

Rod,

I'm still kicking myself in the ass, so I trully do not need your help...

Their was some guy making 20/0's out of 14/0 reels. He called one of them "The General". The story made the sharkin forum circuit a couple years back.
