Bamboo Calcutta shark rod, curious...

(@jwidmann)
New Member

I know this is the classifieds, but I'd love to see any projects anybody has. I don't know where this thread actually belongs.
Where I live, there's a large group of bamboo, twenty, thirty feet tall. I think about it every time I see it. How, exactly, do you make a bamboo shark rod? I've heard you've gotta split the bamboo in quarters (in width, like an X on top of the stalk) lengthwise. Is this true? I know it'd bendier when it's green, but it's also substantially heavier.

I know they're obsolete compared to the rods we have today, but I think it would be fun as shit to catch a medium-large shark on a piece of bamboo with some wire guides on it.

Any sort of information will be well received and greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
John

i would love to build a Calcutta rod and just hang it some where. try to get the antique look going on it. maybe mount a reel on it and use it as a decoration.

Steve, that's some of the coolest shit I've ever seen. Do they hold a set like modern fiberglass rods do?

And to everyone else, I'm going to have to build one for the shit of it.
Old senator and all, for a nonexistant nostalgia's sake!

My hubby exclusively shark fished with a Calcutta & a Penn 6/0 every single weekend for over 20 years before he snapped it in half during a big fight!

I was told by JD Hammer that after fighting a big shark on a calcutta rod you would have to lay the rod on the floor and step on it to make it flat again because they have a memory, Steve I think that calcutta you just made was cool as hell, surprised you found an ocean city that old in that good of a shape!

Just an average fisherman.

YOUR RIGHT !
AFTER A FISHING TRIP THE ROD WOULD GET A BEND IN IT .
WASN'T NO PROBLEM .
THE OCEAN CITY 9/0s ! I PICKED UP TWO ON E-BAY $85.00 EACH.
THE HOLD ALITTLE MORE LINE THAN A PENN 9/0 ( METAL SPOOL ).

THANK'S

This is a topic near and dear to my 14 year-old heart :D :D haha I got real bored last winter and bought a 10ft bamboo cane pole. (5$ at Gander Mtn.) Then I cut it down to 8ft, and I took the guides off my Wal-mart special. I wrapped the guides onto the rod with black thread, and epoxied it up!

I had an 8ft light action casting rod  I put an old Calcutta (the reel) 100 on it and slayed the catfish with it on Lake
Okeechobbee.

I always thought having a Calcutta (bamboo) rod and an old Senator would be amazing
