Which rod to go with a 9/0 for a startup combo?
Hi, guys I'm new to the forum and relatively new to the world of shark fishing. Me and my friends have been fishing from the beaches of ft. Lauderdale for a little now and we have caught a few nice fish but it is safe to say that we are hooked and we are now looking into purchasing a bigger setup to target some bigger fish. I know that a 9/0 is not the best suited for huge sharks but I feel it will serve us well and it helps us keep costs to a minimum. We are thinking of using a 200yd topshot of 130lb mono and filling the rest of the reel up with 130lb jb spectra which should give us plenty of line should we hook into anything big. My main question though is what rod should I be looking for? I want to keep the rod under $200 dollars and am open to any options, although i would prefer a shorter rod around the 6ft range. What line rating do you recommend and are there any rods you can buy off the shelf that would serve us well? And what about the custom route, is it possible to get a rod built to my specifications for around $200? (this would be the most plain of rods of course with no fancy wraps or anything just quality components). Any other advice on the combo or anything else is welcome.
Thanks for any help in advance and I am glad to be a member of this great community which has really helped to spark my shark fishing interest.
