what kind of line do I need for beach fishing for sharks?
I have a Penn 114 H2 special senator/ Penn slammer rod combo.
I really want to go with a braided line for the extra line capacity so that I can get my bait 4 to 5 hundred yards out and still have enough line for the fish to run if he needs too
I just want to know would I be better off going with a lower pound mono or can I use 80 lb braid (power pro)?
Im just wondering what type of line would stand up better to the abrasion from the sandbars?
any recommendations or any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
thanks
You won't find better abrasion resistance than mono, that's just a fact. You may spend $50 to load that reel up with braid but a $10 spool of mono will last longer. Looks like you want to get the best of both worlds (don't we all), but there is a compromise.
For what it's worth, here's my 2 cents. I personally wouldn't want to pack on 80 lb test onto a 6/0 Senator, especially if I wanted high capacity. That reel has 30 to 35 pounds of drag, which is great for it's size (same as a 9/0). But since size that matters here I would load it up with 50 or 65 pound braid leaving enough room for 75 to 100 yards of 65 to 80 pound mono at the business end for abrasion resistance. That would give you 700 to 1000 yards depending on how you did it, and that's definitely enough for a 400 yard bait drop and the fight that follows.
Good luck!
