The reel and line...

Recently picked up a Penn Spinfisher V 6500. I choose this real for several reasons, one being im a spinner type of guy, I do a variety of surf, inshore, offshore, and it's awesome water tight seal. I choose this size for the reason that I can use it for big reds, snook, tarpon, and other large inshore fish, and shark also.

However I'm not sure what line combo I should use if I want to fish shark with it. I do land based shark fishing in the gulf and mainly target blacktip and "smaller" shark (in comparison to what I see on here) for the fact that I'm not advanced enough to handle large sharks yet. My spinfisher can hold 430 YDS of 30lb braid or 340yds of 40lb braid. I would Go with the 30lb because I'm casting out 150 or so yards and don't want to have the chance of being spooled but at that point I'm concerned about snapping the line. But then with the 40lb braid I feel like I have the chance of being spooled if I hook into something a little bigger then I want. Which do you guys recommend? Could I do a combo of both or is that putting too much chance on the knot with these lighter braids? PLEASE HELP

Are you sure you can cast out 150 yards? Most people find with bait and wind and line resistance they can only really get 60-85yds. Also those line specs are really small to be chasing any sharks. 350-450yds of at least 50lb (65lb is better and 80 is best).

You can put 300 yards of 50 pound braid on that reel and not have to worry about it ever again. Chances are slim that you'll snap the line because of fighting a fish too hard/too big of a fish. And if you do get spooled, it would be because your shark was friggen huge. No shame in that.

Sounds like you got a good setup! Post pics!
