how do you stop them!
im in the process of getting different gear right now because I have had my 12/0 and 10/0 manhandled 4 times in the past 6 months by monsters.....
twice on my keys trip, once in town (naples) and once in boca grande!
I created this thread for everyone to share how they stop monsters

im upgrading my gear to be able to, my plan is to get either a 14/0, 80w or 130 load it with 1200 yards of jb hollow core an top it off with 250mono its going on my 8 foot rod

as for my rig
x2 12/0 tuna hooks, 6 feet of 200lb wire and 8 feet of 400lb mono I also run long double lines with a bimini twist

I plan on stopping the next monster I hook :D
do you? if so how?

Okuma 80wII - 100lbs of drag!!!!

700 yds 200lb jb + 200+yds of 200lb mono topshot

Rig

20 feet of 1400lb mono shock leader + 5 feet of doubled no. 27 wire and 1 18/0 - 24/0 circle hook.(two hooks are not neccesary, I promise if you have a big fish it will inhale the bait and as long as you give it adequate time to run you wont have any problem missing hook ups.)

My next purchase will be a 130 size reel, Most likely a fin nor. Packed with 2500yds of 200lb braid and 250yds of 200lb mono topshot.

Tiagra 130: 600 yds of JB Hollow core with 400 yards of LP 250 Mono on top.

Ocean master 7'4" IGFA 80 LB rod.

Rig: 20' of LP 700LB mono, 6' double strand #19, LP 18/0 Circle's.

Now I just need to hook that monster to test out the gear LOL !

A reel for a truck, ya cant pass that up! I got this reel used, took me a couple months to pay it off. It was spooled with 1000 yards of fresh 130 mono that the guys at the tackle shop stripped and saved for me on a spool. Now i have back up for the 14/0. All in all, it was a great deal.

The Makaira is a fantastic reel. It's easy to use, has great drag, and is very easy to clean. The sand came right off my reel the last time I rinsed it.

I think you are fortunate to find yourself in this prediciment. Hats off to you on that. I would imagine an Accurate ATD 130, Duel 12/0W, and or Everol 18/0 would be tools you could get in your toolbox to maximize your chances of landing the Big Boy.
