Stepping Up- Questions about the 14/0

I'm in the process of setting aside a little cash here and there to finally buy a 14/0. So I began researching line to put on it. I decided I wanted to go with 125-130, for the extra strength over 100 and better capacity than 200. But I'm confused as to how much line it will hold. I hear about all these different spools-brass, aluminum, and the "three-piece" and that they all have different capacities. And to top it off, Penn seems to under-rate how much the senators will really hold. I'm really wanting to fit close to 1000 yards on it, but if I have to settle for 750 I will. Do any of you have real-world experiences as to exactly how much mono you were able to fit on your 14's? Any suggestions on brands?

Is that only for the newer aluminum spools? I would probably get a used one and didn't know if there was a difference in capacity on the older models. Or should I stay away from the older models and look for one with a black aluminum spool?

They are a basically a star drag 130 international so an old aluminum spool 14/0 will hold 1000 yards of 130 trilene...but go bullbuster mono and not trilene...I fit 800 or more yards of 200lbs dacron on my 14/0 and it has the diameter of 150...the new black spools will hold about 150 or so less yards of 130 than the old aluminum spools so go get a used senator for like 350 on ebay I reccomend the User tightlines 31 I got mine from him

Thanks to everyone for the input, but one last question. Is one spool better than the others? When I finally get one, is there one particular style I should try for over the others? I noticed on eBay right now there are several newer black aluminum spooled 14's as well as a couple old school stainless spools. Is one better than the other? Or does it not matter? If it doesn't make a difference I'll try and find a newer black spool.

Good choice to use 130, fill it all the way up ,there shouldn't be an issue with getting a 1000 yards on it you might be just short or a lil over!

Go with the aluminum spools not the black ones if you can help it.

The black spools are aluminum. The chrome are brass.

I'm no expert, but I think some people will suggest avoiding the three piece spools. There are some reports of these spools coming apart. It is easy to see the three sections on the three piece spools when the line is removed. I haven't heard of issues with the chrome plated brass one piece spools, or the black aluminum spools.

Here's a pic of a chrome one piece spool out of my 12/0:

I don't have a personal photo, but here is a three piece spool listed on eBay.

The aluminum spools are easy to identify as they are black.
