spooling makaira
hi guys want some help regarding line for my new okuma makaira 80w, the average size sharks in my area (southern Western Australia) are 7ft but you can hook great whites, tigers, makos, hammerheads, bronzies and dusky up to 3 or 4m. up north ( I go to Exmouth 2 to 3 times a year ) you could hook a 10ft plus shark, with tigers, bulls, hammerheads, lemons, nurse and heaps of reef sharks.
cheers SHARKHUNTER ![]()
Hey mate I'm relatively fresh compared to some of the old salties around here, but it's the internet so i'll drop my 2c anyway ![]()
From what I've gathered, spooling a reel is very dependant on the spots you fish. For example, if your fishing locations don't have many steep sandbars, reefs or structure, you can fish a braid set-up with a mono topshot and give yourself over 1000m of line capacity that will handle some serious drag and monster sharks. But if your areas have plenty of reef or sea shells or rough ground, fishing straight mono gives you a lot better abrasion resistance.
I personally fish my 50w about 50% braid 50% mono, gives me enough of the tough, cheap mono to handle nicks and cuts and make sure there's no braid in the water while the bait soaks, but enough line still on the spool to fight a decent fish.
You'll find everyone has a different preference or opinion, but it's important to tailor your setup to your own type of fishing.
Cheers
Kurt
