hoping for a lot of input on this
what are your thoughts on spinning tackle for shark
im thinking about adding a big spinner into my arsenal for shark fishing, there are many days where loading the yak is a pain...
my solution is a big spinner, we have been catching lots of shark within casting distance so I think it should work
does anybody use big spinners
what do you use? rods reels line
how do you rig?
whats the biggest shark caught on a spinning reel?
and other suggestions?

I know some guys use them. They like the new penn spinfisher 10500 and the fin nors. Both are good reels.
They use braid normally because of the added capacity it gives (normally 65-80lb).

Some big sharks have been caught, bulls to 8', lemons to 8', hammers to 9' (I think).

Good luck man

Get the Penn SSV 10500. You can get over 600 yards of 65 LB braid on there.
Pair the reel with a 12 or 13 foot rod rated for 4 oz minimum weight. Make sure it is a graphite rod and not fiberglass.
The casting rigs I use are overkill but it is very rocky where I fish.

7ft of 500lb Mono, 12"-18" double strand #15 to a 12/0 circle. I'll use a snap clasp where the mono meets the wire with a 3 - 6 oz weight depending on size of bait and conditions.

I saw an 8ft bull and 9 ft hammer caught on the same reel in the forms. I have landed Monster tarpon, 7'10" lemon, 8ft scalloped hammer and big eagle rays. My Buddy got an 8'2" lemon and another one got a 7'6" lemon. A massive eagle ray was also landed, measured 5' across. Of all these fish, the tarpon and the eagle ray put up the best fight. Neither one of them took more than 300 yards of line.

If you're looking for cheap, hit up walmart for an Ugly Stick surf rod. They always have 'em in stock. Never go wrong with an ugly stick!

If you have a bass pro by you, check out the recondition rod rack. I get ocean masters there for $50 and $60 instead of $150

wheres that rack?!?!?!?!?
the reel is going to be a fin nor ofs 9500
what would you suggest for the length and lb test of the rod?
I was going to go with a half spool of 50lb braid and half 65lb for line?

Get at least a 12 ft rod. Since it's a two piece ( I assume) you could even get a 13 footer.
Look for a 20-40lb rod but a 15-30lb will also work.

You can mix/match the line if you want but you might be able to get a 500 yard spool of 50 or 65 lb braid. There is an eBay store "United Outdoors" that has great deals on power pro line.

The Fin-Nor is a GREAT reel!! ;)
But really it's never let me down, though I haven't fully tested it. Pulled in a 6.5ft bull easily and a 7 footer another night same way.

I have decided on buying the walmart ugly stiks then if I like using the spinner I will build a nicer one!
what kind of rigs does anyone throw on these I was thinking 2-3ft of wire with a 6oz egg weight in it and 4-5ft of heavy mono and a 9/0 tuna hook
any suggestions on the rig?

I've been throwing about 4 ft of wire with a big Mustad circle...Biggest one Sports Authority carries. I forget what size exactly. Also use a standard snap to add either a big pyramid weight or a spiderweight so it catches in a strong surf or current. I throw it with the 7ft rod so I don't have the heavy mono before the wire.
