Shimano TLD 50LRSA
Does anyone have any opinions or experience with the Shimano TLD 50LRSA? This is the model with the 80lb drag cam. I am looking at buying a lever drag for shark fishing from a boat, and later on some genera loffshore stand up fishing, and this reel has been recommended by a local captain, with several other captains running these reels in my area. How are they with durability? Any problems with the graphite frame using 80lb. line? Shimano states 30lb drag at strike and 40lb. at full, very impressive figures. I was set on Internationals or Tiagras, but if the TLD 50LRSA will work well, I would consider these, as I can buy 2 for 1 compared to the gold reels. Just want to be sure they will last and perform well. Thanks

TLD's are awesome reels. At the end of the day any reel can break. Some easier than others but they break when past their capacity. Max drag like you stated of 30lbs at strike is good which you can fish up to 120# test (1/4 the breaking strength of the line). Off a boat you don't need much line capacity because your on a boat and the TLD should do fine. With tiagras and internationals more likely for internals to break and a tld will have frame failure due to the graphite. Despite all this, boat or land I have not seen (nor is it common) to see pictures of huge sharks 400+ caught on graphite. I do not know your budget but you can find a good used 2 speed international between $250-$350 on eBay even local. hope this helps..

Any reel will break. It's all about not surpassing their capacities. From the #'s of drag your stating, you should be able to fish max 120 # line. Considering though that if you get line taken real fast, which will lead to higher drag #'s as line is played out, I would not fish the max line therefore 80lbs of line seem sufficient, which would mean setting strike to 20lbs. Also, since your on a boat, at the end of the day you can follow the fish. TLD's are great reels. Frame failure is likely on TLD's if stressed, while say an International or Tiagra would have stressed internals and frame failure wouldn't be the case. Its all about how your going to fish and preference. Hope this helps.
