Rollers!

Hey guys I am redoing my 10ft rod (some say huge harnell, some say lamiglass, I say beast slayer!) and putting a roller stripper and tip on it. Now my question is which roller has the largest opening for knots for line to lines and which is best for braid, IE pacbay eliminator tips if the roller catches at all the braid shoots up to the side and into the gap and will cut you off. I am looking at stuarts but dont have any experience with them.

Also, I am using the largest stripper made by any company and a 30size tip...yes a 30, rod was longer before I got it and looks to have been cut a few inches.

I am a 100% believer in aftco rollers... and yes they make up to 32 size tips If I remember correctly... may be a special order though... as far as stuarts go... They make massive stripper guides that will no doubt fit any knot through and probably your finger  ... But as for the construction of stuart guides... the metal used on the roller itself isn't full resistant to rust, as I have noticed on several sets they start to gain rust right in the middle where the line would lay... the rollers are held by the ordinary metal sleeve screw and it's just metal on metal... the advantage of aftco rollers in comparison is that the roller is NOT sitting directly on metal... there is a (literally) bulletproof material which separates the metal sleeve screw from the roller itself... a teflon sleeve; making the guides smooth and super heavy duty.

Just an average fisherman.

I don't know if they're a different model to the ones Mark is talking about, but mine has Stewarts on it all the way up. No sign of corrosion yet, but I took the whole lot apart and greased them all to keep the water out. I also always hose down my rods and reels after fishing which helps too. There's loads of room for knots and the way they're constructed there's no way line can get trapped between the roller and the frame. I like 'em! :D

hello,
personally the stripper ,or any other guide should never see a knot go through it,if you ever have to tie a knot,it should be on a rod with the line already out of the tip,and that reel should be full of line,of at least the same pound test, you are waisting you're time by using heavier line,i personally use 3/4 the size of the first reels line, gives me a bit more yardage, and with that big belly in the line , it's as if it was the original drag on the fish.and when you get it all back (hopefully),that reel will be back to full and you still have a full spool of line out in the water.hope this helps.

Your talking bout tying rods together he's talkin bout having braid as backing which most people do unless they use like a 14/0 or 16/0

Yeah I dont get spooled so I dont tie knots like that......This rod will have my 12/0 everol on it with braid to a mono topshot...thus the knot.

Also, anyone have experience with Winthrop rollers? I know they are expensive, I want info on functionality

I have both Stuart and Aftco - I wash my stuff off after every trip and have no rust after 2 years. I like the Stuart better from a design and price perspective.

Yeah they only sell sets though and I am not sure on the sizes for them. Can't really find anymore information on them. I do remember about 3 years ago talking to the owner of Alba Rods in scottland and he said they were nicer than the winthrops.

They are pretty expensive. And sucks if they only come in a set. But they do have a 10mm one which equals around .39". Pretty large opening. And yes, not much info on them.
