Hey everyone, sorry for all these posts asking stupid questions. I'm looking at a fin nor marquesa Ma50T single speed reel or the marquesa MA50TII 2 speed reel? There $420 for single speed and $470 for the 2 speed. I would also like to know what kind of rod to get for sharks? I haven't seen any at the store or online I need some help finding one for not to much. I'd also like to know if anyone else has any reel ideas that are around the same price or cheaper then the marquesa.

I am in the same situation! Which shark reel to start out with???????

I think I would stay away from that fin nor. I have read a lot of reviews where the drag is very sticky!?

I have been doing a lot of research on the OKUMA MAKAIRA. Some say the tolerances are not as good as say a Tiagra but who cares with a 5 year warranty.

IS there any experienced makaira guys out there?

A great first reel is a senator 10/0 or 12/0. Good drag pressure and plenty of line capacity.

The 9/0 is a legend but you can get a lot more drag pressure from the 10/0 or 12/0.

If money ain't a thing, get that Okuma or an Avet. Everyone swears by them. Take good care of your stuff and you can always sell and upgrade later

Maybe santafro will chime in on his makairas. As for rods, if u got the money then go with Barrett rods http://www.barrettrods.com . If on a budget, check the classifieds here or get a new star rod for cheap reliability.

A 9/0 senator would help save some money, but doesn't the 9/0 only have about 24-25 pound drag? isn't that a little low for sharks?. But how much are the 10/0 and 12/0 senators? I'm new to shark fishing so I don't really know much. I'm actually going out tomorrow night for them, can anyone give me some advice on what to do and any tips or tricks on catching them? We'll be kayaking baits and casting them. We have some mackerel, ladyfish and some bonitas.

A 9/0 would be a good first reel (was my first shark reel) but the Okuma Makaira 50w is pretty awesome. The tiagras, internationals, and the avets are all good reels but I dont think they come close to the Makairas.

Good Luck
