I'm not an expert by a long shot but I've seen these things happen. If the reel's still messed up and you haven't already thought about these things, consider

-If the spring under the tension knob is broken or too flat, a spool can get tight. It seems like it would do the opposite but it doesn't.
-It could be gummed up inside where or near where the spool spindles touch-old grease or grease+dirt.
-If it's been dropped or had something heavy on it, it could not lined up right inside. That could be bad.
-If you serviced it recently, the spool might not be sitting square or you've put in drag washers that are too thick.
-Could such a big reel have a spool distorted by mono? The real old 9/0s have 3 piece spools, maybe they can distort.

I hope you've got, or will get, everything straightened out.
