Penn Squall Review (40LD)
After looking around and reading different reviews on lever drags I decide to get a Penn Squall 40LD. I looke at the TLDs but liked the squall more. I spooled it with 300yds of 50lb braid and 123yds (to the brim) of 40lb mono. So far I love this reel!!!! Amazing drag, super smooth and plenty of it. Clicker is the loudest I have heard and had two setting for volume. The two stag setting for the handle is nice and at low the cracking power is ridiculous. It pairs well with my Tiger Ugly stick 30-60lb but I will hopefully be upgrading the rod soon. I have it set at 13-15lbs at strike and 20lbs at full. I highly recommend this reel to anyone looking for a small powerful package. Any questions feel free to ask. Will keep you up dated when I hook a big ol ray on it. Bottom photo is at 20lbs of drag (pulled a nail out of the fence by accident this way).
I've got one of these as well, I bought it when I was first getting into sharking and it's now my small bait/short drop reel. It's just fun, pure and simple.
I hooked and landed a bull just over 7ft with it and it fought a 8-9ft scalloped hammer right into the shallows before having the leader cut through.
I got mine as part of a combo with a 20-30lb rod, which is a bit on the light side for sharking, but makes for some mean bending ![]()
Considering turning it into a slide baiting reel in the future, saffa style.
