Its a 117L model which means its assembled/made in the USA, but almost all companies use Chinese made components to some extent.

i believe that itll be a good model, as the ht100 drag and upgraded handle are vast improvements over the old models

just because it says 117l doesnt mean it was made here. when i can go into a penn factory and see all the parts being spit out of machines i will believe they are made here.

no way possible. my 80w holds just shy of 700 yards of 130 mono.

yeah they messed up on the 12/0 specs as well. 1100 of 80 is way to much

no, I believe that is correct. I have never owned an 12/0 How ever IF i remember correctly its slightly larger then an 80w

According to my specs on my paper work an 80w will get 1000 yards of 80.seeing how i have almost 700 yards of 130 mono that seems to be a little more inline. so that would make more since then the 14.

500 $for a 14/0 doesnt seem reasonable to me. 375.00 sounds more realistic. Besides what does a 2012 14/0 do for you? It doesn't have the history like from 30 years ago. I'd spend good money on an oldie goldie before one thats not even close to proven. After penn got bought out I have had nothing but problems.Same thing with star rods. All of their accessories are china fabricated. I have sent 4 rods back to star rod for the ceramic inserts falling out.

I'm willing to bet the 14/0 is assembled here in the states but the parts are still china made.. i'm 100 % confident with this theory. hell, Red tail hawks are mass produced in china. I couldnt believe that especially from their history and whats on their website. Claiming that they have been made by local angler for so long fishing fort pierce and such.

I give up. Bring our work back to the states!!!!!

with out a doubt the parts are from china. my luck id take it apart and get some rice to fall out of it. for 500 id rather get a 50w avet.

yeah bit tackledirect, west marine and txsharkfishing all say its 800 of 80. As does penn's retail store. so they do mess up on line calc

yeah 500 is alot, no doubt about it, but we cant really speculate on the new ones, as no one has used them and reviewed them yet.

the old ones may be classics, but most people upgrade to higher quality smoothies or carbontex drags, which is '2012' tech

no everything made in china is a POS, almost all our stuff is made in china these days

99.99 percent on things I purchase that are china made have issues.

If they are using the cheap SS metal that is being produced from china there will be issues. I hope for penn's sake they are machining everything from the post screws to the the gears at their facility.... They can not afford to bring a phenom of a reel back to have it fall apart.

I want to see some reports and videos of the long range guys putting heat on them with grander tunas day in and day out for a year.Only then will i be convinced penn is on its way back to the top. I would love to see fellow sharkers using them as well. Penn needs to start designing all of their products back in PA.

like your tv, cellphone, car radio etc??

as bass said, he called them and they said its all being made here. thats direct from them.

yeah but youre not gonna use a 14/0 for tuna if its your job. 80w's and 130w's are how that game is played coz they have so much more drag, and thats how you get a fish in fastest.

and long range fishing is usually outta san diego going for YFT not BFT which are usually 200-450 for a cow

anything that is made in china. fishing equpiment.

clothes.

You know how many pens (Bic) I purchase from walmart that do not work right out of the box?

or maybe the lures that break when a fish hits them?

or how about shoes that fall apart with in weeks of owning them?

Everything is made in sweat shops by numbers not quantity.

just from my opinion and personal experience.

my shoes dont break within weeks. my lures dont usually fall apart, i have several that are 10 years old and still work fine.

im not sure what this all has to do with the 14/0 because ive said numerous times, bass called them up and they said theyre all made in the USA. so thats all we can go off of, unless you want to call them up and get a different answer from them

Just a side-note for thous who may wonder:
A good trick that i learned is to use a nice high temperature car wax, rubbed all over the empty spool before any type of line is spooled. Make sure you read the melting temperature of that wax. The higher the better, due to high shark runs that generate a lot of heat - while pulling continuous drag, under heavy drag settings. In that way it won't really matter what type of spool the Penn is, since waxing once a year - takes care of this problem. Especially when using braid or dacron type lines. Not to mention that one can of car wax is only few bucks that can last for years, versus paying for a new spool, due to corrosion issues.
Also, some tackleshops, use paraffin to rub all over the spool before spooling the line, while that's good at low temperature, as soon as the spool hits 99F, the paraffin melts.
