Need help please!! (sharking rigs for casting from the beach
Hi,
I am from Arkansas and have never been saltwater fishing but I will be in florida for a week in july and I want to do some surf fishing. the problem is I don't know how to make a good castable rig for sharks since I don't have a kayak to take my bait out. Ive read so many things about rigs that im now confused.. I know I want to use 49 strand coated wire instead of single strand wire but should my mono part of my leader be 300,400,or 500 lb test? and how long should my mono be for a castable rig?... should my bait be inbetween me and my sinker or should the sinker move? I am going to be using a penn spinfisher V 10500 it can hold 670 yards of 65 lb braid and I think im going to get the 12 foot ugly stik rod to go with my penn reel... I have no clue what im doing and I need HELP.......Any advice or comments would be much appreciated and even drawings of how I should build my leaders and rigs would be great also.
Im mainly looking for shark rigs but if you have any info on surf rigs for other species of fish I would be interested in these also.
Thanks,
Hi,
This is what I use with great success for Blacktip, Spinner, Nurse and Lemon sharks.
Braided main line / swivel / 200# test (about 6ft to 8ft) / swivel / single stand wire (about 3ft to 4ft) / circle hook.
My pyramid sinker is attached to the swivel next to the mail line (the 200lb test side).
Take about 6 inches of heavy single strand wire and attach it to the 1st swivel with a haywire twist (the 200lb test side). Take the tag end and bend it to create a V in the wire (custom hook hanger).
Attach the barb of the circle hook (with bait) to the custom hook hanger you just created.
Now your weight and bait are together for maximum casting distance and you have a 9 to 12ft leader. I can get 60 to 100 YARDS depending on the sinker and bait size. The circle hook will come off the hook hanger 95% of the time.
Good luck.

Hi,

Thanks,
The 12 foot ugly stick is a very slow rod and casting distance is greater with other rods, however many fish have been taken on that rod (can't beat the price). I use anywhere from 50lb to 65lb braid with no issues. The V10500 is a beast of a reel, but it may be best for larger sharks when yakking out your bait (tougher to cast). I've used reels from 7000 to 9500 with no issues. Most of the sharks rum along the beach and not away from the beach plus you have a lot of capacity with braid.
I hope this helps.

whats a good rod that you would recommend? I kinda want to stay under $150 if I can...
Get a 12' 2piece Tsunami Surf rod, rated 20-40lb 6-10oz, i use one for my casted baits it works great, you can pick one up for 130$ shipped at: http://www.fishermansheadquarters.com/r ... inning.htm
Should pair well with the V10500
for rigs try this i use Josh's method and it holds up well and not a lot of $$ to make: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChAUj9kFXlA
Josh did a great job with the video.
His weight and the bait are about 2ft apart which will cut down your casting distance. Its not a big deal where Josh hunts. His leader will not pass through his guides so you will have to cast the entire 8ft leader which is harder unless you use an off the ground cast.

Also what kind of line would you recommend me get as far as color? I want to go with 65 lb braid and I will have a mono leader Im just wondering what you suggest
thanks
sorry for all these newbie questions I just don't have anyone that saltwater fishes to ask...
Color dosent really matter for shark fishing, i'd say its more of a personal preference whatever color you think looks good.
As for brands i'd recommend momoi diamond braid or jerry brown, both are good stuff i use 65lb momoi on my casted gear and its tough as nails

I have that rod and its great. You should also look at the bass pro 12ft rod. Ocean master- another good rod for the price.

I surf fish regularly in Tampa bay. My rig is a 10ft surf rod with extra large guides ( $50 at Walmart ) it's called Alpha. Plus a 4/0 Penn S running 80LB Braid. This setup may pose some controversy here but from lots of experience it works well for me. Plus the cost is pretty minimal, Craigslist is a honey hole for used reels. Now as far as terminal tackle i use a gun metal extra large 12/0 circle hook with 100LB steel leader. 5 oz pyramid weights. take wire leader and string it through your bait ( mullet, bonito, lady fish etc ) almost like an artificial bait would be rigged. Once rigged tie an echo friendly balloon and cast as far you can then ( hope and see ) if the current can carry you the extra 50 ft to the 3 rd deepest trench. Once there sit back and make sure the bait clicker is on and the reel is secure. have a cold one and wait for the fun to begin.
