My "new" 12/0's. What do you think?

Here are my two shark setups I just bought. A little ruff, but the reels seem to be in good working condition. As for the rods, they are in worse shape then I thought when I first bought them. You can see cracks in the piece that slides over the reel. But the guy wanted the same price with or without the rods, so I took them. They are all old, and also not lookers, but as long as they catch big fish, I will be happy!

Let me know what you guys think, good or bad. I don't know much about these reels or rods, so feel free to point out anything. I noticed that the spools are different on the reels, not sure why, or which is better.

I plan on spooling with 100lb mono, but that's not set in stone yet, may go 125.

I really want to tear into these reels, clean and relube. What kind of grease is recommended, and how much should use and where? Just looking for some simple clean and lube instructions.

well the one on the left which has the counter weight handle is a 3 piece spool i think. correct me if im wrong guys and the one one the right is one piece. the one piece is better they are in pretty rough shape. you are def gonna have to open em up id start off with news drag washers off top why u have it apart use some polishing steel wool and gasoline it will take the corrosion right off. this will give you a better look at what your working with. im not sure but it think a guy on this forum restores reels jus ask around you can always order new parts and bring them back to life. hope your not to deep into them

Congratulations on your purchase of an American workhorse reel the Penn 12/0,although they are most definetly in rough shape but you can either sell them to buy a better condition 14/0 (more line and power)or Avet 80,Penn International or try and refurbish them if thats fine for you.

Be careful with the one on the left with the counter balance handle those reels are from the 50's to 1960's and the gears are not as well engineered or made as the newer Penn 12/0's and yes the spool may very well be a three piece that can spread and be very difficult to replace.

You have two rods and two reels hopefully you got a good deal on them and now you can be a creative entrepeneur and fix and sell/trade for other more desirable sturdy versions,,,,,,,,, or NOT!! Skies the limit to ways you can use these older models to step up the ladder.A 12/0 will work but when you hook a MONSTER you will be much better off with a bigger reel or a more modern one.Good luck.

even if the reels seats werent cracked i probaly wouldnt put a 12/0 on those rods those types of reel seats arent very strong. you will probably want a rod with thicker metal reel seats

Also that 1 reel is a 3 piece, But the other may also be a 3 but at the very least it is still a chrome over brass spool and weaker than a solid cut spool, dont let that stop ya. 3 Piece spools are not so bad. I fished them for many years and so did everyone i know.i never saw 1 spread and i never heard of 1 go bad, Till the last decade :O)

But to be blunt those reels look like they were stored under water on the reef for a few years...BUT hey it is a Penn and i bet they work just fine!

Well thanks gentleman. Yeah, maybe I should have held out and bought something different. But they are mine now, and I have a lot of work ahead of me to get these things in good working order, well at least one.

As for the rods, I will probably just set those two to the side, and get a decent rod to put one on.

Trying to figure out if I can recoup some money by selling one of the reels, or if I would just be better off trying to keep them both?
