Help educate me on beach rods.
I'm confident about purchasing an Okuma Makaira 80W in the near future. I need help in regards to rod selection. This will only be fished on the beach, and I'll be loading it with hollow core braid and a mono topshot.
I see many of the experienced people on this forum using 8'-10' rods to land sharks. What do I gain by using a longer rod? What would I lose by fishing with a 6' stand-up rod or tuna stick?
I welcome all thoughts. Thanks.
From my experience a long rod from the beach is not only unnecessary but can also get in the way. You need a rod that you can handle well that will give you the leverage you need to get the shark in. The long rods are good for bridges but in my opinion not from the beach. I recommend a rod that is 7'2". Its not to short like a tuna rod so it gives you leverage but its not to long so its easily manageable.

Thanks for the info.
Are there any affordable recommendations you can make? When I say affordable, I mean $400 or less.
My brother-in-law has his Avet on the XX-Heavy Shimano Terez Rail Rod, which I like, but we haven't hooked up with a monster yet. Have any experiences with the Terez model?

The Makaira series of rods are great, they are only 6 feet long but are extremely well manufactured. They are only $289.99
I've eyed the Makaira rods. None of my current rods have rollers because I worry about them holding up to the beach conditions. Maybe my salt and sand concerns are unfounded. How well have your rollers held up?
Extremely well, rinse every time you get back home thoroughly and oil every 7 - 9 trips to keep in tip top shape. They dont need to be oiled that often but it will extend their life by 5 - 10 years.
Thanks for the info. You've been more than helpful.
