HARNELL and Harrington -the classic land-based shark rods
just got an old Harnell, or what looks to be a harnell, it has the harnell rubber foregrip anyways, mildrum rollers and tip, wood rear section that was painted black and a Varmac #6 seat. Best I can tell from measuring the section behind the tip is that it is a 130lb blank, 580 I suspect from the chart. The rear end of the blank has very thick walls also. It does have a little bend to it, not the broomstick I suspected it could be.
this is the exact rod I have, same color wraps and all, mine is a little rougher shape I think

What would you guys do to it to rebuild it and get it ready for use? I plan on fishing it hard in 2011
I am just wonder what model rod that harnell is that Rene is holding? does anybody know? it looks to be 10ft, I have heard of people saying that its a 552, but according to the chart a 552 is only rated for 50lb test yet Rene is using it with a 14/0 with 130lb test? crazy
Recently sent this one off to be restored to original, my guy is matching the thread, re-wrapping, finish and re-buffing the seat for me. He's gonna try to find an original gimbal as the one on it was in rough shape. Any of you guys know anything about this rod? My guy has parts for the original guides and is gonna fix them up to keep it original. Fish it, hang it on the wall or both? this is the question. Thanks in advance for any info..

Thanks Will! The only reason I am wondering whether or not to fish it is that the only reel I would fish on it would be my 14/0 and I also have this:
This one is about a foot longer than the Harnell at 7' and has more modern guides. It is solid glass and rather stiff though. Not sure which would serve best. I have heard some guys express doubt about the mildrum guides. I have never fished them. What are the main strengths of the harnell? Can you tell I love shark gear? I guess it's a cheaper hobby than fast cars!!!

I have a Harnell similar to that. Same colors, foregrip, reel seat, & butt. Mine is only rated for 20lbs. I just have it hanging on the wall. mine is more of a collectors item in my opinion. But Kyler (GreenHorn) has a Harnell just like that that he shark fishes with and has caught some fish with it. May wanna ask him what he thinks of it.

I had read before about the Harnells w/ low line ratings, what size Varmac seat does yours have? The one I put up has a #6 seat that takes the feet of a 14/0 deep. It is hard to imagine putting a reel of that size on a rod rated for 20 or 30# line? Mine has not been cut or re-wrapped according to my rod guy. I looked at the chart Will put up but it refers to 1 piece rods only so mine is not on there. I will see if my guy can tell me the specific model. Thanks for the info. guys, I am really enjoying SFSC and appreciate the welcoming atmosphere.
