Getting spooled... An idea I had

I've read a lot of stories of people losing their entire line to big sharks (though I've yet to experience this myself) and was wondering if anyone has ever experimented with an emergency break-off system to avoid this. Let me explain what I mean... Say you are fishing a 130lb line, but you tie in a short section of 100lb between a couple of swivels just before your leader. This way with any luck the line will break at it's weakest point (the lighter section), your main line will be saved and a shark doesn't end up towing half a mile of line around that will later become a hazard to wildlife.

It's a system I have always used when fishing boulder-strewn salmon rivers, using lighter leader so I only lose the end of my line if I get hung up. Not sure of the practicalities of this system when dealing with heavy lines, but I thought I'd share it and see if anyone has tried something similar.

Wouldnt that defy the purpose of fishing 130lb mono in the first place? I know my 12/0 and 9/0 locked down will cut 200 and 130 respectively so getting spooled is basically impossible.

I usually wrap the line around the reel twice and point the tip of the rod where the shark is at, and sit down and hold on tight. It usually pops at the leader and you'll get your line back.
