Dacron, Mono or Braid?
I am looking for capacity and abrasion (aren't we all). Should I put all Dacron, all mono or braid backing to mono?
Just to give you an idea, I will be fishing in a deep narrow bay that has lots of mud flats and oyster beds. The sharks I am targeting are........well.........lets just say as big as they come
Probably going to use a 16/0 or 14/0
Well........they as large as predator sharks get
With the nastiest teeth of them all
Do you see em alot in you're area? Or are you gonna be shooting in the dark? I considered giving it a shot myself but would be a long trip from home. Gotta really do my homework before I commit to it myself. What do you have in mind bait, leader and hook? Id definitely double up #19 singlestrand at LEAST and a 16/0 Sea Demon or go on Sharkoutlet and get one of his giant "Sharkmen" circles. Idk about bait but Id definitely stay away from mammal meat. Maybe a huge chunk of Batray or a Leopard?

I have never seen one, but I never go out in boats either. Their have been 1-2 attacks a year in that bay most years it seems. Their are rumors that it is a nursery for them. I have studied the depth charts of the bay and it is either a cliff area with a deep spot 100 yards off or a beach with big waves and big current on the other side. I have talked with fisherman who have seen them, hooked them, and had them take fish their. As for set up I haven't planned any terminal yet. For bait I was thinking either buy a couple of full salmon/albacore in china town the day before or using a huge fillet wing from a big bat ray.
If you do commit to making the trip out I can paddle baits out and show the what's up.
Here's an idea:
500 yards of 130lb dacron with 500 yards of 130 lb mono on a 14/0.
When you get a senator, make sure it has the HT 100 drag washers, and you can toss in an extra washer for a couple more pounds of drag.
I believe the stock max drag was about 32lbs (with asbestos washers). HT 100's get a couple more lbs and then the additional washer helps. DO not over do it since the reels were not designed for 65 lbs of drag.
The tech at my local shop is a penn genius and says that a 14/0 with a drag system as described above can pull about 50 lbs of drag without compromising the reel.
I have not tested my drag pressure, I am just passing along his words.
Again I Dont Understand Other Than More Line Capacticay Why Would You Tey And Tie Mono To Dacron ? Dacron Is Cord, Compared To Mono.
Dacron is thinner but doesnt stretch as much. Mono stretches an unbelievable amount before it breaks, plus when drug across rocks it can withstand punishment. For example, braid has 1-3% stretch capability before it breaks, dacron is 5-10% where as mono is around 50%. If you are using dacron to mono then get good hollowcore dacron and hollow thread so there is no knot and 100% connection.
200lb Mono is thick and stretches/abrasive
200lb Dacron is diameter of 130 mono and stretches a little
200lb Braid is diameter of 50 mono with very little stretch.
So people run the stretchy abrasive stuff on top then braid underneath for shear capacity.
I personally run braid to mono usually but right now am rigged up with 1150yds of 200lb Jerry Brown Hollowcore braid to 450yds of 200lb Hollow Cortland Dacron and my 14/0 everol isn't full......
As for the OP shark fishing in that bay I would personally put 1000yds of 200lb braid then 200lb mono on top. Id then run 30ft of 1000lb mono or 480cable to 6ft of triple strand number 19 to a large swivel to 6ft more of triple strand number 19. As for hooks I would use the Sharkmen Circles (35$ a wack) or a Mustad SuperMarlin J hook (18$ a wack). Do it right the first time, and ohh have 4-5 people on standby because if you get a 1500-3000lb close to shore you are going to need pulling power for safe release. Plus id have 5-6ft bolt cutters
500 yards of 200lb Jerry brown then fill um up with 200lb mono. 30 foot of 1000lb mono, to 15 foot of 920lb cable combined with 19 wire to a single Demon 20/0. One monster bait and a whole lot of time to spend waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting... you get the point! good luck man! I hope you do hook up. Last thing is if you do hook one and it does not work with you as you guide it to shore, then you most likely watch all your line leave your spool. I do think they are lazy sharks and would tire quickly but if they dont the power those fish have available theirs no reel that's going to stop them from doing what ever they want, especially from land
