Considering a 30 Class Reel

So, I was originally planing on getting a 80w, but when I checked on getting a rod built for it, it was recommended I go with a 30 or maybe 50w if I wasn't comfortable with going to a 30. This will be my first stand up style reel I will be using, I've always used spinning tackle in the past. I figure I can put as much 100lb line on a 30 as I can fit 130lb line on a 50w. So what do you think? Should I just go for a 50w, or is the 30 really all I need to catch large sharks, and have plenty of fun catching the smaller ones? Obviously not talking about catching a great white, but how about most other sharks? I'm not looking set records, just have a good time.

I currently will be fishing in NC, but will probably be moving soon, to who knows where? Potentially Alaska.

The reels I'm currently looking at are the Okuma Makairas, 50wii and 30ii se. Not the only reels I have considered, but the two I'm leaning more toward. Thinking I can get around 800-900 yards total of line on either one with the line sizes stated above, including a short 100-200yd mono topshot.

I'm not to sure on the drag specs on the makiras .

I own an 80w It has been total over kill for every shark i've hooked. But the one day I latch in to that big boy I Will be thankful for it.

If I were you I'd go with a 50 or a 50w

load it with 130 lb braid I would do about 500 yards. fill the rest up with 130 lb mono for abrasion and you should be good to go. Unless your going to be doing 200+ yard drops you should be fine with what has been reccomended.

if you go with a 30w I'd do 100 lb braid 600 yards and fill it with 100 lb mono .

A 50w can land a 10-12ft shark if done correctly and still be fun on smaller 6-9fters. A 30w will be a lot of fun on 6-9fters but will struggle with hammers and large tigers so I would say to get a good 50w and load it with 130 braid and a good topshot of mono. Again it all depends on budget as well, I mean you can find a decent 50w and a 30 or 30w used for the price of a new 50w in a lot of cases. Line is expensive so make sure to budget that out as well.

They pull a Max of 55lbs on the 30, and a max of 85lbs on the 50. And if I go with the 30, I was also thinking 600yds of 100lb braid topped with 100lb mono.

If they are putting that kind of drag I would look in to 130 lb for the 30 the diamter of the lines are very similar.
