big boy reels
I have some old penn senators but i want to get one newer reel im not sure what to go for; fin nor 130, tiagra 130, or a everol 14/0. i am looking for the bigger reel so which one of these would be better i dont need anything over 60lb of drag but i do want as much line capacity as i can. Are there any other reels out there and if any one is selling one let me know.

So many choices today it's mind boggling. You gotta figure what's best for you.New fangled reels can give you greater drag on a big fish but some are allergic to sand,,,,,,and some weigh more then the Penn Senator 16/0 so you're beating yourself up from the git go.If you're fishing for giant hammers you can get TRASHED with any reel New or Old just choose a reel that will fit where you plan to fish and what species you are targetting.
ps,,,,,remember some sharks will manhandle any reel you use so do the best you can with what you have STUDY,PREPARE, and PUT IN AS MUCH TIME AS POSSIBLE.

Thanks for the reply Will. I was just curious of some other peoples opinions on only the newer reels because I already have a 16/0 senetor and wouldn't trade it for anything. But I want to add a new reel to my collection and its gonna be a newer reel and im planning to put it on my unlimited rod so its gonna have to be big. When your fighting a big shark its GO BIG OR GO HOME
All the 130 size reels are going to give you about max capacity.
The pretty penny for the best of the best like Accurate 130, Alutecnos 130, Duel 12/0 is nuts!
The Penn, Shimano, and Fin-Nor are still very expensive
I believe the Fin-Nor is the biggest line capacity out of them all.
Senators in 14/0 have caught some true freaking monsters.
With all that said I really dont agree with big capacity catches big fish. A reel that produces powerful smooth drag and can hold 850 yards of lines over 130lb has a better chance then a jerky weak reel with 1500 yards of line.
i agree with u cj the newer reels with smoother and stronger drags will catch more fish but if u have one of those newer reels in the 130 size you will have smooth/strong drag and the extra line capacity if needed which is why i was wondering if the fin nor 130 reel holds 200 yards more then the other 130 class reels.
Hard to explain but once a fish gets over 700 yards of line in the water the amount of pressure the line itself puts out while being pulled through the water is crazy. If you have a 130 reel and put 1100 yards of 130lb line on it... by the time you get over half spool with your drags set at 40lbs the line will most likely pop! why??? when you add up things like speed, current, water drag, spool shrinking increase and others it would blow your mind how much pressure parts of your line has on it. ever yard of line that leaves your reel from the sand decreases your odds of landing that monster on the other end.
I am not saying 130s are bad... I just cant find enough benefit in carrying around or fishing a reel that heavy and bulky.
The benefit I see in a 130 size reel is the ability to run heavy line like 300lb braid backing and 200+lb top shots when fishing near bad cut off spots. spooling like this your capacity will still be in the safe zone under 900 yards of line.
Everyone that has fished for a long time will have there favorites and why... Its just an opinion! Buy a big reel that is proven to catch big fish, spool it with heavy class line and fish for a monster. Just make sure you buy what you want and feels right. Every reel listed above have caught big fish and would be a good big boy shark reel.
Hell!!! I fish 50Ws for the biggest fish that swim and use drags people think cant be done. But you know what? I freaking love it!!! and the only thing that will change my ways is a FISH! and damn I cant wait for that day.
