What is the best hook for monsters over 10'?
Circle only, no J's!!!!

No small mouth hammers, only makos, blues and maybe an accidental white.

Thanks for the help

P.S. why does everyone use such small hooks? I would think a hook with a 4-6" gap would be better for it than a smaller gap.

Nope, shore based in Cali. So you have a good idea of what that means.
What hooks did Fangman use?

Up your way? It means 7 gills and spooled 80w's. And possibly a ticket from the DFW if they catch you running big baits up there. (Has and will happen).

Good luck with a blue or mako...

Jeff's fish swallowed the hook, so it doesn't matter. I've never seen or caught a mako over 6ft that a circle hook worked on. Might try a 20/0, 24/0 or even those demon 20/0 and 27/0 circles. The ocearch guys use them and they are able to wrap around the mackerel sharks jaws better and set.

I probably won't be running baits up north much more down south (Oceanside).

How can you get a ticket because of the size of your gear. Sure they have ideas of what you MIGHT be doing, but until you say your targeting the wrong kind shouldn't you be fine?

A mako from a California beach is enough of a accomplishment in itself

I'd use Lindgren Pitman 18/0 circle hooks

Ya a mako is a feat in its own. Lots of juvenile whites in the Oceanside area but then you have to contend with beach crowds and the beaches close at 10pm.

Dillons beach is like the GWS Capitol of California and one of the most heavily watched beaches by DFW.

Your best bet for larger sharks and any incidental catches would be off the pier with a cast able 50lb set up and use a trolley rig to send out live mackerel. No more than 250lb coated cable and a 10/0 circle. Most use 90-135lb cable and 5/0 ringed live bait hooks.

50lb outfit for makos?!?

Sounds like quite a challenge from a pier and a rarity

Considering there haven't been any makos caught from the piers and threshers and GWS are caught every weekend on 40lb setups I think the odds are in your favor.
