Bait deployment advice?

What is the best way to keep my bait down? I plan on using a brick or broken concrete block with about 6 foot of 20lb mono tied to the eye of the hook so when the shark picks up the bait it cuts the line from the weight? Is that the right way or are there better ways of doing this? Thanks.

Yeah that method works. I sometimes use electric tape around sharper rocks then tie my breakaway line around that so it doesn't cut the line. Usually use around 5-6 feet of break away line. Also, when you drop your bait be sure to take the extra couple of seconds to make sure it's not tangled.

Awesome, thanks for the advice. By doing it that way though, would the leader get tangled if the bait is spinning in the current with the break away line tied to the eye of the hook?

i use a break away rock or brick but i put i slider on the shock leader im running then tie the break away to that so its not close to the bait and doesnt have a chance to entangle

I also use a break away on a slider on the shock leader. I have found sometimes a shark will pick up the bait a couple times times before running with it. This way the bait stays where I put it till the shark runs with it and the weight breaks off.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the advice. My buddy and I are gunna soak some baits tomorrow for the first time. Hes got a 14/0 and i have a 12/0. Im gunna put a slider on my leader. The leader is about 14ft long (12 ft of 400lb and then 2 or so foot of wire doubled), so should i use about the same length break away leader? or is 6 -7 ft ok? And is 20lb test good or should i go bigger with the break away? Thanka again
