18/0 Everol
Catcinjiants- u didn't piss me off. Everybody has there own opinions and ways they like to fish. The avets have a ton of drag but I don't think any 1 can hold on to 60lbs of drag. There's no way I would use braid for shark fishing or use any kind of other reel for shark fishing besides an old school penn senator. My choice
Of reels are my two 14 and a 16/0.

Guys that weigh 150lbs can hold 60+ lbs of drag.
here is Dennis braid who is known very well for putting over 65lbs of drag in stand up gear. I practice pulling 50+lbs of drag off my Avets in the braid harness just incase the time comes when i do have to lock it down. penn senators cant hold 60lbs of drag.
check out the links at the bottom. look where the lever is on this hoped up 80w

Braid has its time and place. If you are going to be running all braid you will be f'ed over in Florida. Sorry, but 14/0 sized reels are still the only way to go for the true monster class fish
I do run alot of braid but i still run top shots of Momois diamond in different lenghts depending where I am fishing. 14/0 senators yea your good 14/O or 130s in Penn, shimano, Alutecnos, Everol those kinds of reels are not even in the same grade as senators.(as you already know) when fishing line was twice as thick and metal had to be twice as thick to be strong is why these reels where even developed. The new age reels that are stronger, put out more drag easy to handle are slowley taken the big 14 and up size reels away.
You would never dream of catching a 1000 lb Bluefin on an 80W 6 years ago, now you are getting world record yellowfin tuna on 30 wides. Did I not see you using spinning gear and little conventionals on Bluefin Tuna and you think true giant sharks CANT get there ass whiped buy a new age 80 wide???? We have brought in a 10 foot hammer on old single speed 50 wides with 22lbs of drag in under 1.5 hrs.
Sorry about the post hi jack I did intend to stir the pot.

1.5 hrs is a ridiculous amount of time to fight a 10ft hammer from a boat nonetheless...the fish probably rolled up dead. You can use light gear, but its impractical...you are either gonna lose a lot of fish or will fight the fish to death. Those record hammers that zach caught would of smoked any 50w...

Again, fighting fish from a beach is way different than fighting a fish from a boat with padded gunnels. I have big game fished for years, and have had the pleasure to be friends with some of the best sharkers of this decade...I guarantee you that no one will last long holding more than 40lbs of drag from the beach. 60lbs is IMO humanly impossible from the beach
.

...Bold statement my friend. how can you tell me a 14/0 with max drag of 60lb and a 50 w with max drag of 60lb is going to change how much drag the fish feels? or because the 14 holds more line you think the fish knows that?
This was drawn up buy dennis himself for fighting with massive amounts of drag from the beach.

What you said doesn't even make any sense. Max drag is a moot point here. those high drag numbers only mean something on a boat when you're fighting fish out of the gunnel or chair. a 50W spooled with mono would of gotten destroyed by those grander hammers...both fish came to within yards of spooling the 14s!
That diagram is sketchy at best. If someone uses that thing they are going to catch a face full of sand or wood when it flips...
Damn Duke
for some reason me and you have just a different out look on things, we have butted heads in the past.
What does not make sence a 50W with even 40lbs of drag and a 14/O with 40lbs of drag. the point is 40lbs is 40lbs does not matter what reel its coming from. I also see you changed your statement to a 50 wide spooled with MONO well get destroyed, ok i agree if you only have 5-600 yards of 130lb mono on a 50 to a 14 that holds 1000yards make a 300 yard drop then the odds are against the 50. Now if you have that 130lb mono backed with 500 yards of 130lb hollow braid on the 50 what the heck is the difference now you have a 50w with 1000 yards of 130lb with the same drag as a 14.
Make it easy... Both (50 and 14) have 1000 yards of line and can handle same drag presure. Why do you think a 14 is so much better?
I am going to leave this post alone. I will start a new one where we can compare new 50W vrs 14/Os Senators

Simple. The 14 has more cap? Now that wasn't too hard, was it? Braid will get you f'ed over in south Florida, even with a topshot. These ain't your flat MD beached brotha...you have to contend with reefs, ledges, and rocks on Florida beaches. That braid wont last long rubbing over a reef
That picture makes me laugh everytime I see it. Doing something like that just means more shit you gotta carry to the beach. Not very practical in FL when you can't drive on the beach...especially for something that's FAR from a necessity. Regardless, those Everols are freakin' BA!

While you are right about flipping over, there is also one other aspect - the pressure is absorbed by knees where they'll gonna get very painfully after a while. A good example is to lift 50-60lb of weight on your shoulders and stay in your knees. That would tell you exactly how long and how painful will gonna be.
What actually works is the pressure that goes through you.
This is my design, and this will give you the best of all worlds, cheap, easy, and all the extra pull gets absorbed through your harness by the aluminum pipe or any piece of metal pipe digged in the sand.

You can also use one rope, and with this system you can even do the walk type of drag when your hands are tired to crank the reel.
I have fished big senators and have since gotten rid of them for my old school everols. My 12/0 everol loaded with braid with a topshot (1500 yds of 200 braid with 100 yds of mono) will put it to any shark in these waters guaranteed (12-13ft tiger took out maybe if lucky a quarter spool). Hell I catch 8ft plus sharks on my spinning tackle with new age gear. My Shimano Stella 20000 loaded with 50lb braid has 55lbs of maxdrag and I run 774 yds of braid (plus spool backing of 40yds). This reel fights sharks/goliaths better than my old 9/0s and is significantly easier to use.
The old school senator guys would be really surprised and I think made believers if they gave these reels a chance. Most don't want to try other things when their method at hand already works most of the time (big senators) when it garners risk (ie potentially losing a record breaker).
