12/0 or 14/0 ?and also where to find spare parts
I fished with mike alot this winter season and from december on I learned alot from him and zac and also stepped up my style of fishing to "aggressive"....we're gettin spinners and small bulls on the beach in about 2.5minutes average.....just lock the drag make them run at you not away....it takes alot work and you will sleep good at the end of the day.. our hooks we keep them sharp so once the hooks set good you turn em and make the run at you and not away basically...and then beach a green angry shark, get a picture, dehook if possible then release em..and just keep fishing dont slow down
Mike and zac are experts with the big reels and to me theyre sytle of fishing aggressive is basically stopping the fish before they stop you....
Aggressive fishing like this pays off for those who are up for the challenge......

we took alotta video footage this season fishing for those blacktips....and i mean alot of video, im hoping to take more this year of us on the bigger fish. you will understand on why we use use bigger reels and have a aggressive style working these bigger fish. i just hope the equiment holds up to the task...in the last 3 months fishing hard we tore a lotta tackle up, broke fighting belts and tore stiching and clips out of harrnesses and blew up a few 9/0's.....thats why we went back to the 900h's and to be quite honest i wish the penns would hold up like the diawas....the newer stuff and penn parts dont and that leaves me in a position to look towards a 130 lever drag over the bigger penns...in todays times when every thing is made overseas now including the penn, we have to look at whats the best availble from there....the metals not the same anymore and its softer even on the bridges on the 12-14/0's. thats what will go first on them ...Team Rebel brought up a newer 14/0 last year to me to look at , and after a few fish the spool bent on it and had issues with the bridge as well....im pretty weary of those reels now after all those faithfull years using them , but nothing ever stays the same anyways...mike
well for me i like my good old 12/0 filled to the top with good old 80lb for fishing the beach
i have no problem puting those baits out past that 600 yard mark
an still have plenty of line to fight that fish
an for thr bridges i like my other 12/0 filled with good old 100lb line
i think about those guys that put the 130 on those lil reels are fishing on hopes an dreams
you dont really have enough line to stop a larger fish
sure its great to put the vbreaks on a nice bull an stop them befor they ever leave the power towers
i guess i just like to pack as much line on my reels as i can
power pro i just dont think is ment for the senators you get a large fish an that line is goin to dig so deep into that spool
but a thats jus me
I have 3 16/0 and 1 14/0 the 14 is the 2nd sandbar allways. The14 allways comes up short when ya puting the baits out off the beach. I use 130lb dacron by r/w interprises. The stuff dont stretch at all. it is olive green so the blue fish dont cut it off. It sinks so no boats get it. My 16 holds 1100 yds. Its priced fairly, 30$ a spool. The only bad thing is it will burn a rut in your arms and fingers. I change line every 2 years so its got a good life. It holds a good frey factor and is strong. The bigger reels give ya something to hold on to, and is eaiser to hold still while ya crank. As far as the weak bridge, just be aware of how it tears up and avoid the situation. Anything can be torn up. The smaller reels are great on boats when ya can follow the fish. Stand up on a boat is diffrent than a pier or beach. To put that pressure on a boat takes a chair. Gold reels are for boats they are not built for the sand. The design of the senator is simple and works jamed full of sand. I hooked a 11'2" hammer in the belly between the peck fins, she ran 800yds on the first run. at one point I was looking at the loops 100yds from the bottom of the spool. 2:45 min, and I was glad I threw the bait off the pier. If I would have taken It out she would have striped me off. I fish for the biggest fish I can catch, why waist my time and let the best fish of my life take all of my line.

Study what the best in the sport have used to catch the world records, the biggest slob tigers, the meanest hammers and you will see the Penn Senator 14/0 and 16/0 every time. For maintenace free life on the sand, bridge or on a pier they are the way to go.You need strong line and plenty of it,,,,,,,,for me 130 lb test a 14 or 16 is all i need when that 1500 pounder of my dreams comes around. OH!! and a good team to help out-very important.Like Ernie wrote "i fish for the biggest shark i can catch",,,,,,so be prepared right when the moment arrives.

I recently bought an old 12/0 with the heavy duty parts of old and I really like it and wont move up until I find a 14 or 16 of the same age. They are built heavy duty in the 60s and 70s,and can be found on Ebay.....just my .02
I will find a 16 one of these days.
I fish areas very similar to the bridges in the keys. Some are short piers in rivers and other are beaches full of channel markers. I have no room to let a shark run I need big gear and and stout tackle. I have already ruined one spool on the ol classic 14/0. warpped it pretty bad. Anyone know where to find upgraded spools? I use 130 to the brim with a clissic 7'2" finwick with bigfoot rollers. Most my baits are dropped within 120 yards of the beach/pier some as close as 25 yards.
When it comes to the yards they dont do me much good in the long run I need to stop these fish fast. Lemons which is what we tend to catch are beached and released within 10 mins unless foolhooked. We hooked plenty bigger fish that we could not stop before getting us hung up on the channel markers. And changing locations is not an option, any ideas??
look at what that guy bucky
he useto used a 12 with 100 lb line line but he is fishing on a boat
he used a 9/0 with braided line on his first unlimited class world record and went to an Avet on his second 80lb class record after he was introduced to Avet reels by Capt.Ben Chauncy on chew on this fishing show FYI
