white street pier is hot! HUGE SNAPPER (long post in detail)
me hammer jimmy and johnny decide to go to the keys we stop at a tackle shop for sabikis and the lady there is preaching to us that boat fishing is better than a bridge blah blah blah land is boring blah blah finally we leave and go to long key and walk tubelures and jimmy who is a little ahead of me walks into a school of crevalles and he gets 2 crevalles and johnny goes into the water with his diving gear and swims into the school of them and spears them we try chasing them around more but no luck so we have our shark bait now we want snapper bait because there are some decent mangroves there so we get dork/dwarf jacks and greenies and put them on ice and make our way to white street pier after we load up we get the big crevalles and cut them in half and casted them out on our shark reels then we go to snapper fish but theyre not there all we get is bonnetheads. later on we run out of water so me and johnny volunteer to go get a gallon from the nearest gas station and while we were gone a school of blacktips came and cleaned all of the baits except my rod and hammer landed 2 5 ft blacktips there were problems with my camera so we couldent take a picture so we just let it swim free because by the time i would get my camera working it would be dead. so later on im sitting down talking to johnny thinking it slowed down and i see hammer using live grunts to try and land snook and i think hmm i want a keeper snook and hammer must know what hes doing let me copy him and hit a sneak attack so i get the sabiki rigged with bait get a grunt and walk him around the pier i walk him around the first corner to the side the rocks are at and walk the grunt to the end of that side and i reel him up and cast him just past the rocks in no more than 3 1/2 ft of water and he gets hit i feel whatever it is take the bait and the rod bends 3 times and i set up whatever it was starts stripping me at leadt 40-50 yards and im thinking i either got a huge snook or a huge tarpon and i slowly bring it in he takes 1 or 2 more short runs and i not saying a word nobody knowing i have a fish on and i get him to the top and i cant make out what it is due to it being dark so i walk it around the second corner where there is a shorter wall and where there is more visibility by this time i shout i got one come help me flip him so johnny comes thinking i have a tarpon and hes coming for no reason and he looks over the rail and flips and goes holy s#!T and starts running to get his lobster net and i shout what is it and i hear crevelle and i think what the... thats no crevalle if anything a grouper while johnny is running away hammer and jimmy are walking towards me and as soon as hammer sees the fish he goes jimmy get that fish grab him by the gills so jimmy flips it over the rail and i thought GROUPER!!! then hammer goes a cubera!! it was huge 32 inches and fat and i flip out with the biggest snapper of my life i couldnt belive it. later on that night we were throwing plugs and jimmy gets a 30 inch snook keeper and then it starts to rain and shortly after we left we went to bud' n' marys to weigh it it was 16 lbs and we notice that it doesnt exactly look like a cubera it looks like a mangrove but none of us can tell so we assume its a cubera/mangrove because its neither it didnt have the stripes of a cubera but it had the teeth of a cubera and the color of a mangrove and johnny says there is a species of snapper that is half and half so i guess its that so if you can tell me which one it is that would help alot and if it is a mangrove i screwed up big time because it couldve been a record and its already filleted so too late. here are the pictures see if you can tell me what it is. on the way home we stop at that tackle shop to prove the lady wrong but she wasnt there

i was all smiles after i got it

my snapper next to jimmys 30 inch snook

16 lbs 32 inches long and a 22 inch girth
in 3 1/2 feet of water belive it or not

Oh my goodness, Meir, that is an absolute beauty! It reminds me of a mutant snapper that Jerry caught many years ago at Old Wooden Bridge. We never did find out if it was a mangrove or cubera. The difference can be very subtle. I guess you've graduated from being a gino to being a first rate fisherman. Congratulations! ![]()
hello felows,
Anyway that is some nice fish you caught, the gray i mean, for a snapper to live that long and not be caught,is in it self a record, but here is food for thought, how good are you're measurements, the world recod is 17 lbs,did you weight the fish.because if you go by lenght-X-girth Square-divided by 800 the fish wieght is 21.78 lbs, just food for thought, anyway you can prove any of you're measurements.love to see you're name at the top of the list.by the way did you use a star rod by any chance?
by the way did you use a star rod by any chance?
jeorge that jigmaster is my new lucky rod i nailed a redfish and this cubera and a ton of ladyfish and small mangroves it hasnt let me down yet untill it does its my lucky rod
who knows what ill get next on it i want a permit.
and i think jerry is right it probably is a cubera

Way to go Meir. That's a bigger snapper than most have caught from a boat .Congratulations on watching ,observing and putting to use the techniques of a master angler (JD Hammer)You're on the way to becoming a master angler yourself young man.More importantly you are learning valuble lessons that are in short supply in today's world taught by one of the most decent and kind men that I know (James Fuqua).
The snapper is a Cubera and the key is the two big fangs and the big teeth just behind the fangs.

Another example of a Cubera from a bridge Will's 12 pounder in the 2009 Rene Memorial

Mair you still got a long way to go. You are catching on quick and have some inpressive catches. In your short time of fishing almost two years. You have done very good and could be compaird to Aaron. You both have what it takes to be great . Remember you can do anything in life you want if you put your mind to it .It not always about fishing. Its about life.
dammmmmmmnnnnn you need to slow down there may may!!!!
your making your teachers look bad!!!!
in 1 year you are ahead of me for most sharks in one year and you caught a bigger snapper than ive ever caught in my whole life!!!!
wow meir!!! im exited to have a new young hungry kid like you to join hammer and the phenoms this year and compete with us in the tournaments!!! you add another dimension!!!
