story at the bottom...

Jd, my mom, and I headed up North to meet up with Jimmy levelwind. We got out there, set up the gear and started fishing. JD and my mom fished the beach for sharks and Jimmy and I fished the jetty for jacks and cudas. After losing some we decide to make a run to some boat ramp in search of rays. Unsuccessful but lucky, we managed some fresh finger mullet, a peanut dolphin carcass, and the carcass of a 40lb kingfish. JD and mom had already lost some sharks, my mom lost a big shark on the 9/0.

Just before reef road

waterspouts forming

What?

Seen enough yet tourist?

Approaching the spot

Piping sand since sand could be piped

Fishing in the slush

riggin' up

Lost one

Eventually my mom gets the first shark of the night.

reel down

pump up lol

This blacktip was no joke 120lbs and yes it was a blacktip, checked the anal fin

around 6 and a half feet

released

Jimmy got a solid hit on the peanut dolphin

moments later my mom's 9/0 gets hit hard and runs in

it's burning

LOL

Fast forwarding to an hour later...
Jimmy's progress:

Kim's progress:

another 6 and a half foot tipper, not as fat as the last one, but fought 3 times as hard.

released

2 hours later... damn 50lb mono... time to upgrade lol... tried to warn you about those dolphin carcasses...

The pictures don't even do this fish justice, a few inches shy from 9ft and had a girth like a pregnant bull lol, 300-350lbs, gave it a nice back cracking trying to pull it up a little.

-------------------

So... after I set that 5ft kingfish carcass on my hooks nicely, JD takes it about 120-150 yards out, it sits for a while, I walk up the jetty to see what Jimmy is catching, all I could hear was screaming clicker... I run full speed, grab the rod, tighten down the star and keep on running... I was stopped dead in my tracks after about 3 steps, quickly turned around and tried to sit on the ground, there was no sitting, I had heavy drag on the reel and the fish was yanking me up off of the ground and I absolutely could not lift my rod up, I even held on to the spool a little and was pulled forward , this shark stripped a little under 3/4ths of a spool in about 3 minutes... my star was burning hot, black oil dripping from the spool and green grease from the stars, I poured ice cold water on the reel and it starts popping like popcorn, I could have made a cup of joe on my reel  , after another ice cold bottle of water it was decently warm, I hope I saved the drag in it, we shall see later. Until then, all I have is this:

Nice story and catches but i'm afraid that i have bad news- when you start hearing that pocorn noise that was the point whe the pinon gear and the spool axle got grounded where they combine. The only way to fix it is to change the spool and the pinon gear. When you'll open you reel you'll see a 45 degree cut in the axle of the spool where goes in the pinon gear- and that's bad.

No... it was from the insanely hot gears boiling the ice cold water I poured deep into the reel..., most of the time if you rush water to the reel before it gets too hot you can save your gears and drag washers, everything is good except I may have to oil it again.

You've just expierienced another MONSTER HAMMER and indeed the popping sound was the water frying, boiling as it hit the hot reel side plate/star drag.If anyone out there has any questions of how fast a 12/0 or a 14/0 gets spooled ,,,there you have it. With a big hammer it's under 4 minutes from my personal expierience and you'll never forget it once it happens to you.=Not alot of time to think so you better have a game plan and a strategy before hand,,as the spool gets smaller the drag automatically tightens so you have to remember to back off a bit .....BUT YOUR BRAIN IS GOING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION AS THE LINE GETS SMALLER WE TEND TO WANT TO TIGHTEN THE STAR DRAG TO SLOW THE BEAST DOWN AND KEEP FROM GETTING SPOOLED

Mark i've got some 200 lb test I will give you just remind me.

A VERY IMPORTANT POINT WHEN TARGETTING THESE OVERSIZED HAMMERHEADS SHARKS (12 FT and bigger) TO TRY AND STOP THEM ONCE YOU'VE MANAGED TO HOOK ONE IS TO HAVE 200 LB TEST SO YOU CAN REALLY CRANK DOWN THAT STAR DRAG AND LEAN BACK TO BEND THE ROD AND TRY AND STOP THE RUNAWAY FREIGHT TRAIN .You'll have lots more power and lots more abrasion resistance and lots more chance of your line holding up in a long drawn out battle.

Mark I wish you would of gotten that beast but you will get more shots just remember to be ready when they come.

I have the nurse curse now, Thats what I get for using Dolphin.
The pictures came out good for how dark it was.
I had a great time fishing with you guys, thanks for posting the report Mark.
JD if Mark would have let you put that king out on the 16 0 we might have had some pictures of a Hammer.
Marks mom was bringing in sharks before I could drag my chubby nurse in! :o
time for 80lb test :)
After Mark set hook on that big hit he had that 12 0 went screaming.
The line almost was looking like it was melting near the end of the spool 8-)
